Manipulating light by light

2011 XXXth URSI General Assembly and Scientific Symposium, 2011
We propose and verify a new concept of an all-optical transistor based on cross-phase modulation between a signal pulse (SP) and a control pulse (CP). An effective interaction is achieved if the CP is temporally locked to the SP in an optical event horizon.

LIGHT

1976
Publisher Summary This chapter provides an understanding of the propagation of light in terms of rays. When a ray is reflected from a surface, the angle of reflection is equal to the angle of incidence. Both angles are measured in regard to a line that is perpendicular to the surface.

Scattering of light by light

Physics Letters, 1963
An investigation of the dependence of the photon-photon cross section on photon energy and frequency, along with estimates on the registration frequency of scattering events, indicates that light scattering by light is observable using modern intensities of laser radiation and bremsstrahlung from high-energy electron accelerators. New lights in light's criteria

Pathology, 2015
Aims Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy-based metabolome-wide association studies (MWAS) has been increasingly used in advanced laboratory medicine and biomarker discovery. Here, we will apply NMR-based MWAS to develop new diagnostic test for exudative and transudative pleural effusions (PE) with improved accuracy.

Zodiacal Light

2011
The zodiacal light is a faint veil of light visible in the Earth’s night sky. Brighter towards the Sun and the ecliptic, it originates in solar light scattered by a huge cloud of dust particles, mostly of cometary and asteroidal origin. The brightness increases toward the Sun and the near-ecliptic region; it corresponds to an increase in the space ...

Switching light with light

Nature Materials, 2003
Photonic crystals can manipulate the flow of light, making them attractive materials for new types of optical components. The ability to tune the optical properties of a photonic crystal over femotosecond timescales adds to their technological appeal.

When is a light not a light?

Dental Nursing, 2008
Curing dental composites using light activation technology is widespread in restorative dentistry. In the first article of a short series, Nicolas Martin and Nicolas Jedynackiewicz explore the principles of photactivation and some of the devices in use in the surgery.

Switching light with light

IEEE Circuits and Devices Magazine, 1991
The basic characteristics of the light amplifying optical switch (LAOS) are explained. The LAOS, as compared to its electronic counterparts, will substantially reduce the interconnect time between components, chips, PC boards, and machines. The use of the LAOS to implement optical logic circuits with multiple input stages that invert and restore the ...
