Using blue-emitting GaN LEDs on SiC substrate chips as primary light sources, we have fabricated green, yellow, red and white light emitting diodes (LUCOLEDs). The generation of mixed colors, as turquoise and magenta, is also demonstrated. The underlying physical principle is that of luminescence downconversion (Stokes shift), as typical for organic ...

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are devices designed to efficiently convert electrical energy into electromagnetic radiation, most of which is visible to the human eye. Some of the disciplines involved in the understanding and utilization of LEDs are reviewed, with emphasis on the III-V semiconducting compounds and GaP LEDs in particular. Salient features

The sources of optical radiation between approximately 0.1 μm and 1 μm wavelength (1 μm = 10−6 m) may be classed into two types according to their spectral line width. The communication engineer is aware of the desirability of a signal source which is monochromatic.

Light-emitting diodes are simple compact optical sources which have certain attractions for use in digital optical transmission systems. They are easy to fabricate and therefore potentially cheap, can be modulated at high data rates, and emit moderate output powers which can be coupled reasonably efficiently into optical fibres.
