When the plane angle of divergence of the beam is small and, hence, the half angle is small, the use of the common relationship ω = 2π(1 – cos α) becomes quite cumbersome.

LED (Light Emitting Diode)는 빛을 방출하는 반도체 소자로서 그 방식이 친환경적이어서 냉음극 형광램프 (CCFL; Cold cathode fluorescent lamp)와 같이 환경오염물질을 사용하지 않을 뿐만 아니라 백열등보다 광 변환효율이 매우 높다. 따라서 최근에 모바일 디스플레이는 물론이고, 모니터, TV 등 거의 모든 TFT-LCD (Thin film transistor liquid crystal display) 디스플레이 제품에서는 백라이트용 광원으로 LED를 사용하고 있다. 또한 실내조명은 물론 야외 조명, 가로등, 신호등을 비롯하여 조명용 광원으로서의 수요가 급격히 늘어나고 있다.
