Ka-chow! A simple irregular 2D lattice model of lightning [PDF]
A model of lightning that captures the propagation of lightning channels on an irregular lattice is developed. The irregular lattice allows us to capture large two-dimensional systems (2 km x 2 km), while allowing grid refinement (on the order of cm) near areas of interest.

The Evolution and Extratropical Transition of Tropical Cyclones from a GPM, ISS LIS and GLM Perspective [PDF]
Not much is known about the evolution of lightning within extra-tropical cyclones traversing the mid-latitudes, especially its oceans. To facilitate such studies we combine a recently constructed precipitation features (PF) database obtained from the ...

Herein, photocurrent generation and optical scattering of atomic force microscopy tips with varying geometries are compared, using experiments and finite element method simulations. Results show that tip radius affects photocurrent and scattering differently.

Comparison of lightning location data and polarisation radar observations of clouds [PDF]
Simultaneous observations of both the precipitation and the lightning associated with thunderstorms show that the lightning is within 3 km of the maximum precipitation echo.

Dynamic and statistical analysis of giant hail environments in northeast Italy
The hailstorm of record‐breaking hail size that occurred on July 24, 2023 in NE Italy developed in an unusual environment, characterized by moderate instability but intense southwesterly flow and water‐vapor transport in the mid‐troposphere. A high‐Θe$$ {\varTheta}_{\mathrm{e}} $$ tongue over the Adriatic Sea was lifted above a cold pool and fed the ...

In the last three years the focus was on the information contained in the lightning measurement, which is independent of other meteorological measurements that can be made from space.

A radar‐based investigation of precipitation growth and decay in South Korea
Within a Lagrangian framework, we quantitatively retrieved and assessed precipitation growth and decay using the South Korean radar network, focusing on spatial patterns over the unique geographical features, including complex topography and land–ocean boundaries. Our findings indicate that the precipitation growth and decay is significantly influenced

Electrification in winter storms and the analysis of thunderstorm overflight [PDF]
The emergence of 24 hr operational lightning detection networks has led to the finding that positive lightning strokes, although still much fewer in number than the normal negative strokes, are present in summer and winter storms.
