Prediction of Lightning Activity over Bangladesh Using Diagnostic and Explicit Lightning Parameterizations of WRF Model

open access: yesNatural Hazards, 2023
Abstract Lightning discharge from thunderstorms is a major weather hazard and the loss of lives and properties caused by lightning is high in Bangladesh due to frequent lightning activity in the pre-monsoon season (March-May). In this study, numerical simulations in predicting the lightning flashes using diagnostic and explicit lightning ...

Activity characteristics of the cloud-to-ground lightning in a severe convective weather event in Arksu of Xinjiang

open access: yes暴雨灾害, 2022
A severe convective weather event occurred in the Arksu area of Xinjiang on 7 June 2017. In this event, two α-mesoscale convection systems (MCS) and their merging and development caused gale, hailstorm, and short-time heavy precipitation at several ...

Analysis of the first gigantic jet recorded over continental North America [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
[1] Two low-light cameras near Marfa, Texas, recorded a gigantic jet over northern Mexico on 13 May 2005 at approximately 0423:50 UTC. Assuming that the farthest of two candidate storm systems was its source, the bright lower channel ended in a fork at ...

Three-dimensional modeling of lightning-induced electromagnetic pulses on Venus, Jupiter and Saturn

open access: yes, 2018
While lightning activity in Venus is still controversial, its existence in Jupiter and Saturn was first detected by the Voyager missions and later on confirmed by Cassini and New Horizons optical recordings in the case of Jupiter, and recently by Cassini

A study of lightning activity over land and oceanic regions of India [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Monthly variations of lightning activity over typical land and oceanic regions of India were examined using satellite data (OTD) for a 5-year period (1995-1999).

Arresting Microphase Separation Encodes Material Mechanics by Sculpting Microarchitectures and Local Polymer Enrichment

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Microarchitecture sculpting via phase separation programs hydrogel mechanics by creating globular, inverse globular, and spinodal structures. Spinodal architectures deliver superior toughness and energy dissipation, while ionic modulation through single polymer phase separation offers a simple, scalable route to tune mechanical properties ...

Atomistic Mechanisms Triggered by Joule Heating Effects in Metallic Cu‐Bi Nanowires for Spintronics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Bi doped metallic Cu nanowires are promising for spintronics thanks to the stabilization of a giant spin Hall effect. However, heat resulting from current injection forces Bi to leave solution, forcing segregation into monoatomic decorations which evolve into coherent crystalline aggregates.

Continual Learning for Multimodal Data Fusion of a Soft Gripper

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Models trained on a single data modality often struggle to generalize when exposed to a different modality. This work introduces a continual learning algorithm capable of incrementally learning different data modalities by leveraging both class‐incremental and domain‐incremental learning scenarios in an artificial environment where labeled data is ...

Alkyltriphenylphosphonium Binding to Cardiolipin Triggers Oncosis in Cancer Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Alkyltriphenylphosphonium, exemplified by TPP+‐C14, preferentially accumulates in mitochondria and selectively binds to cardiolipin, a key phospholipid of the inner mitochondrial membrane, causing loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, severe cellular ATP depletion, and calcium imbalance.
