Lightning flash properties derived from lightning mapping array data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
in this paper size and duration of lightning flashes are examined. Data from the Ebro Valley Laboratory Lightning Mapping Array is used as reference. Additional data from the VLF/LF LINET network and meteorological radar is included.

Study of the total lightning activity in a hailstorm [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Research, 2009
A thunderstorm which developed in North-Eastern region of Spain on 16th June, 2006 is analyzed. This thunderstorm could be severe because it produced hailstones larger than 19 mm. The cell life time was 3h 30 minutes. Radar cross-sections show a strong vertical development with cloud tops reaching an altitude of 13 km.

Study on Temporal and Spatial Distribution Characteristics of Lightning on Qinghai-Xizang Plateau in Summer 2019-2023

open access: yesGaoyuan qixiang
The Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, due to its high altitude, exhibits unique lightning and convective activity compared to lower-altitude regions.Using the ‘Group’ data from the Lightning Mapping Imager (LMI) on the Fengyun-4A satellite, a statistical analysis ...

Enhancement of Cloud-to-Ground Lightning Activity Caused by the Urban Effect: A Case Study in the Beijing Metropolitan Area

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2021
To investigate the possible impact of urban development on lightning activity, an eight-year (2010–2017) cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning dataset provided by the National-Wide Lightning Detection Network in China was analyzed to characterize the CG ...

Activity characteristics of the cloud-to-ground lightning in a severe convective weather event in Arksu of Xinjiang

open access: yes暴雨灾害, 2022
A severe convective weather event occurred in the Arksu area of Xinjiang on 7 June 2017. In this event, two α-mesoscale convection systems (MCS) and their merging and development caused gale, hailstorm, and short-time heavy precipitation at several ...

Lightning activity in the eastern Mediterranean region [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2005
Twenty days of lightning activity recorded during winter 2002–2003 in the Mediterranean region with significant rain accumulation in Greece were studied on the basis of the measurements of the UK Met Office long‐range VLF sferics Arrival Time Difference (ATD) system and the spaceborne NASA Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) sensor onboard the Tropical ...

Area‐average rainfall and lightning activity [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 1997
The aim of the paper is to discuss the statistical relations between the average rainfall parameters for an ensemble of convective cells and the mean lightning occurrence inside this area. The study is based on a data set gathered in France using C and S band radars and two different lightning detection networks.

The influence of meteorological conditions on upward lightning initiation at the Gaisberg Tower [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Meteorological parameters associated with the initiation of upward lightning discharges from a tall tower were investigated. The parameters, including temperature, wind speed, air pressure, and relative humidity, were measured at the Gaisberg Tower top ...
