Limiting surge arrester failure under direct lightning strokes for attaining service continuity of distribution networks

IET Generation, Transmission & Distribution, 2020
This study introduces an arrangement of surge arrester, Rogowski coil, and triac to attain service continuity of distribution networks. This new arrangement is proposed to limit the arrester failure due to lightning flashes striking distribution feeders.

An Efficient Surge Arrester Placement Strategy to Improve the Lightning Performance of Long Transmission Line

IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting, 2020
Installing surge arresters would enhance the transmission system reliability but it comes with extra capital expenditure. In order to determine the most efficient and cost-effective surge arrester configuration of the protected transmission line, a novel

Contamination Tests for Lightning Arresters

IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1970
Contamination deposits on arrester housings when wetted can cause external flashovers and, by disturbing the voltage distribution on the internal gaps, can lower the power frequency sparkover of the arresters. It has been found that the conditions that produce the lowest external flashover often do not cause the greatest reduction in sparkover ...

Lightning Invaded Overvoltage Monitoring Technology in Substation Based on the Principle of ZnO Lightning Arrester Block Voltage Dividing

International Conference on Logic Programming, 2018
The lightning invaded overvoltage in substation is one of the main reasons for insulation damage of substation equipment. Due to the shortage of bandwidth and sampling rate, the existing monitoring device cannot meet the monitoring requirements of the ...

The Placement of the Transmission Lightning Arrester (TLA) at 150 kV Network using Fuzzy Logic

International Conferences on Information Technologies and Electrical Engineering, 2018
Lightning is one of the main considerations in the causes of the high voltage network’s overhead lines failure. The lightning even also become one of the most dangerous event on the transmission system.

Lightning performance assessment with line arresters [PDF]

open access: possibleProceedings of 1996 Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition, 2002
The paper describes the studies performed by a team of engineers from FURNAS and USP to determine the application conditions, the type and ratings of surge arresters to be installed on a few transmission lines operated by the first-named company in order to improve their performance for lightning strokes.

The Protection of Solid Insulation by Lightning Arresters

Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1941
Introduction THE protection of distribution transformers or other apparatus against lightning involves the basic problem of limiting the voltage applied to the insulation to a value adequately below the insulation strength. The effect on insulation of chopped waves and full waves of standard impulse wave shapes such as 1.5×40 microseconds has been ...

Mechanism and Application of Arrester Block Voltage Division to Lightning Transient Voltage Monitoring in Substation Transformers

IEEE transactions on electromagnetic compatibility (Print), 2019
Lightning-induced overvoltage in substations is one of the main causes of insulation damage in transformers. As the complexity of power grids is continuing to increase, the existing lightning overvoltage statistical waveform may no longer meet the ...

A Proposed Lightning-Arrester Test

Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1907
It is generally recognized that the worst disturbances to an electrical transmission system from lightning are due to the unbalancing of the circuit-elements after the passage to ground of the initial lightning charge.

Analysis of Surge Arrester Damage Accident on Distribution Line due to Winter Lightning

2019 11th Asia-Pacific International Conference on Lightning (APL), 2019
In recent years, surge arrester damage on the distribution line has been drawn attention. The authors analyzed surge arrester damage accidents that actually occurred in the Japanese winter lightning area by simulation and inferred the characteristics of ...
