The direct measurement of lightning current

Journal of the Franklin Institute, 1941
Abstract Two cathode-ray oscillographs have been designed and employed to record the current in the natural lightning stroke. Three years of operation in the tower of the world's tallest structure, the Empire State Building in New York City, have given many records of strokes to this structure.

Measurement of lightning currents and voltages

2020
This chapter begins with a historical introduction, followed by two other sections, one relating to lightning current measurements and another to lightning voltage measurements. In the historical introduction, a brief historical background of lightning current and voltage measurements in substations and transmission lines is shown, such as the ...

Lightning Arrester Discharge Currents

Nature, 1948
DURING the last five years an investigation has been made of the discharge currents of a number of 38,000-volt lightning arresters. The transmission system on which these arresters were installed is operated with its neutral point earthed through Peterson coils; the lines are not equipped with overhead ground wires.

Electric Currents in Lightning Flashes

2014
The length of a lightning channel can be tens of kilometers long, and at each point on this channel there is a current flow that changes with time. Unfortunately, it is possible to directly measure only the current at the strike point of a ground lightning flash.

Abnormal currents in distribution transformers due to lightning

Electrical Engineering, 1942
Abnormal currents in distribution transformers due to lightning are analyzed both theoretically and from field experiences. Under certain conditions of direct stroke transferred through the arrester to the neutral of the secondary winding, excessive currents may wreck the secondary windings by electromagnetic forces.
