Ultrastructural expansion microscopy reveals unexpected levels of glycosome heterogeneity in African trypanosomes

open access: yesJournal of Microscopy, Volume 301, Issue 2, Page 222-240, February 2026.
Abstract Kinetoplastid parasites include several species. Trypanosoma brucei causes African sleeping sickness in humans and a wasting disease nagana in livestock. Trypanosoma cruzi is the causative agent of Chagas disease and Leishmania species cause leishmaniasis, which can present with visceral, cutaneous, or mucocutaneous symptoms.

Who Feels Looked Down Upon? Sources of “Symbolic Violence” in the United States

open access: yesSociological Inquiry, Volume 96, Issue 1, Page 87-108, February 2026.
This paper explores the factors increasing the chances of thinking one's cultural tastes and interests would be looked down upon by others, a sentiment put under the label of “symbolic violence” by Pierre Bourdieu. Using data from a survey fielded in the US in 2017–18 (n = 2,514), it examines the role of social position, lifestyle, family status and ...

On the Energy Source of Green Emissions in Ghost

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 2, 28 January 2026.
Abstract The understanding on the formation mechanism of ghosts as a new category of transient luminous events and favorable conditions for their occurrence is limited. In this work, we examined six ground‐based observations of ghost events captured by digital SLR cameras.

First Observations and Characteristics of Positive Upward Illumination Strokes

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 1, 16 January 2026.
Abstract Upward Illumination (UI) strokes are a subtype of cloud‐to‐ground (CG) return strokes characterized by two concurrent branches striking the ground a few milliseconds apart. The luminous channel of an UI stroke does not connect to the main channel, which gives this phenomenon its name.

In Situ Observations of Ice Crystal Chain Aggregates in Winter Storms

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 1, 16 January 2026.
Abstract Ice crystal chain aggregates—linear structures of conjoined monomer crystals—have previously been observed in strongly electrified deep convection, likely forming via electric‐field‐enhanced aggregation. The NASA Investigation of Microphysics and Precipitation for Atlantic Coast‐Threatening Snowstorms field campaign conducted aircraft‐based ...
