Lightning current measurement by multi-turn differential loop

2010 International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Application, 2010
The measurement of lightning parameters is the basis for lightning protection in gird, for the problem of accurate and safe measurement of lightning current on the transmission lines, proposed a new method of measurement which based on the principle of differential ring can measurement of transmission line lightning current non-contact; introduced the ...

Lightning return stroke current identification via field measurements

Electrical Engineering (Archiv fur Elektrotechnik), 2002
An inverse procedure is presented for identifying and reconstructing the waveform of the lightning return stroke current. It is based only on the acquisition of the electromagnetic field radiated by the discharge channel in various locations on the ground and at various frequencies, and requires no information about the channel base current.

The direct measurement of lightning current

Journal of the Franklin Institute, 1941
Abstract Two cathode-ray oscillographs have been designed and employed to record the current in the natural lightning stroke. Three years of operation in the tower of the world's tallest structure, the Empire State Building in New York City, have given many records of strokes to this structure.

Remote Measurements of Currents in Cloud Lightning Discharges

IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility, 2011
Using measured wideband electric field waveforms and the Hertzian dipole (HD) approximation, we estimated peak currents for 48 located compact intracloud lightning discharges (CIDs) in Florida. The HD approximation was used because 1) CID channel lengths are expected to range from about 100 to 1000 m, and in many cases can be considered electrically ...

The Measurement of Lightning Currents in Direct Strokes

Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1944
The magnitude and wave shape of the discharge currents in 46 direct strokes have been measured during a five-year period at 25 direct-stroke stations on structures ranging in height from 75 to 585 feet. Measurements have been made with instruments capable of recording the wave front and tail of the high-current peaks and the low-magnitude continuing ...

Magnetic measurements of thunderstorm currents: 1. Continuing currents in lightning

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1963
Long-continuing currents in lightning were measured with a fluxgate magnetometer. The results confirm earlier New Mexico work in which electrostatic field and photographic measurements were used in calculating these currents. On the basis of an analysis of 14 long-continuing strokes, the currents are found to average 184 amp.

Characterization of Lightning Current Measured on Tall Structures

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1999
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Lightning current waveforms with short rise times have been measured on tall structures such as the CN Tower in Toronto. Those waveforms show multiple reflection of traveling current waves within the tower.

A Novel Self-Powered Lightning Current Measurement System

IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2018
To address the lack of reliable power supplies for lightning current measurement systems (LCMS), this paper proposes a novel self-powered LCMS. The required operation power of a LCMS can be provided by harvesting the surge current that is measured using a power coil such that the system can be energized to complete a single-cycle measurement and data ...

Design of self-powered lightning current measurement system

2016 IEEE International Conference on High Voltage Engineering and Application (ICHVE), 2016
To address lack of reliable power supplies for lightning current measurement systems (LCMSs), this paper proposes a novel type of self-powered LCMS. The required operational power consumption of the LCMS can be harvested using a power coil from the large lightning current which is being measured such that the system can be energized to complete a ...
