From Local Patterns to Global Context: A Multimodal Deep Learning Approach for Complex Power Quality Disturbance Recognition

open access: yesArtificial Intelligence for Engineering, Volume 2, Issue 1, Page 38-52, March 2026.
A multimodal deep learning framework that combines time–frequency feature extraction, lightweight Transformer‐based global dependency modelling and signal‐based cross‐attention is proposed for recognising complex power quality disturbances. The framework effectively integrates local and long‐range representations, enabling robust and accurate ...

Lightning‐caused disturbance frequency and severity varies with topography in an Afromontane forest

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 3, March 2026.
The results indicate that lightning disturbance severity differs within and among sites, potentially mediated by differences in lightning tolerance among tree species, and provide preliminary support for the hypothesis that disturbance severity declines with disturbance frequency. Abstract Lightning is an important agent of tropical tree mortality, but

Polarization vision and the physiological basis for trichromatic vision in Philaenus spumarius: Understanding host‐seeking behaviour in insect vectors for Xylella fastidiosa control

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Biology, Volume 188, Issue 2, Page 503-519, March 2026.
We investigated the role of vision in host‐seeking behaviour by Philaenus spumarius, the main European vector of Xylella fastidiosa, through an integrated anatomical, optical, physiological, and behavioural study. Our data highlight that the spittlebug uses visual cues, including polarized light, which may aid in detecting the polarized reflections ...

Climate Change, Air Quality, and Pollen Allergies—State of the Art and Recommendations for Research and Public Health

open access: yesAllergy, Volume 81, Issue 3, Page 663-683, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Allergies are one of the major health challenges of our time, associated with a high individual burden of disease and high costs for the healthcare system. Given their prevalence, allergies are also highly relevant from a public health perspective. The development of allergic diseases is multifactorial. In addition to individual factors (e.g.,

Food Apartheid on the Virginia Peninsula: Serial Forced Displacement Meets Serial Environmental Racism

open access: yesAntipode, Volume 58, Issue 2, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Since 2013, the state of Virginia has pursued two significant initiatives: a commemoration of the forcible arrival of Africans in 1619 and a state‐level council to address food deserts. Yet, there has been little discussion of their interconnections. We ask what role might this 400‐year history play in the existence of food deserts today?
