Detection of lightning superbolts
Journal of Geophysical Research, 1977Unusually intense lightning strokes have been observed by optical sensors on the Vela satellites. These lightning flashes are over 100 times more intense than typical lightning. The lightning superbolts are characterized by optical power in the range of 1011–1013 W, have a duration of the order of 1 ms, and have a total radiant energy greater than 109 ...

Lightning Detection from Satellites
1976The detection of lightning by the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) of the United States is reported and two cases are analyzed for lightning flash density. The first is a squall line to the west of Florida on 14 November 1972 (06:27 UT), which has a flash density of 2,4 × 10-5 flashes/(sec km2). The second is the severe storm system of 3–

Observation of Lightning Discharges in Indonesia by Lightning Detection Network
2006 IEEE 8th International Conference on Properties and applications of Dielectric Materials, 2006A real-time lightning location network started to operate in Indonesia in mid 1995 and began providing reliable data in the end of the same year. The network consists of 8 signal receiving stations and works using the Time-Of-Arrival (TOA) technique.

The Detection of Continuing Current in Lightning Using the Geostationary Lightning Mapper
Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2022AbstractLightning with continuing current may have current durations that last for hundreds of milliseconds, resulting in continuous optical emission that coincides with the uninterrupted current flow. The space‐based Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) is an optical sensor that allows for the detection of continuous optical emission.

Lightning Detection with SPICE
The Physics Teacher, 2018Electrical engineers often use software to analyze electrical circuits in order to understand circuit behaviors. Such software allows them to modify components and develop and improve their designs. One popular kind of circuit analysis software is based on SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis).

Lightning strikes on power transmission lines and lightning detection in Colombia
2017 International Symposium on Lightning Protection (XIV SIPDA), 2017This paper presents statistical results about the lightning incidence on power transmission systems in Colombia, based on a three-years failure record of very sensitive power transmission lines and the LINET lightning detection network. Both, failure modes and lightning detection performance was studied.

Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, 1950
On July 20, 1949 what are thought to be the first photographs of the radar indication of lightning strokes were obtained by the Weather Radar Research Project of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The method of radar lightning detection is described, and suggestions are made for research in this field.

Electromagnetic Methods of Lightning Detection
Surveys in Geophysics, 2013Both cloud-to-ground and cloud lightning discharges involve a number of processes that produce electromagnetic field signatures in different regions of the spectrum. Salient characteristics of measured wideband electric and magnetic fields generated by various lightning processes at distances ranging from tens to a few hundreds of kilometers (when at ...

Optical Detection of Lightning on Venus
Icarus, 1995Abstract The night side of Venus was imaged at 18.8 frames per second using coronagraphic optics and a 153-cm telescope during the spring 1993 apparition in a search for lightning. The images were then reduced such that scattered light from the day side was removed and transient signals were sought.

The East Coast Lightning Detection Network
IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, 1986A magnetic direction-finding network for the detection of lightning cloud-to-ground strikes has been installed along the east coast of the United States. Most of the lightning occurring from Maine to Florida and as far west as Ohio is detected. Time, location, flash polarity, stroke count, and peak signal amplitude are recorded in real time.
