Mechanism Analysis and Multiphysics Validation of Lightning Attenuation in Constrained Space

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2022
The problem of resistance reduction has always been the key and difficult point of lightning protection. However, the problem of reducing the grounding resistance efficiently has not been solved. A method is introduced in this paper to solve this problem

Bath Vibration During Open Eye Formation in a Physical Model of a Steelmaking Ladle

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
Using a physical model, this study shows that vibration measurements reliably predict open eye size in steelmaking ladles, offering a practical alternative to visual monitoring. Vessel vibrations stabilize faster than the open eye, except at high frequencies near the bottom.

Effect of Lightning Impulse Current on The Grounding System Model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
The main purpose of the grounding system is to protect human, electrical appliance and building from electrical shock due to lightning or another form of electricity that hazardous. Therefore, to achieve this goal, the fundamental part must be taken into

Lightning Impulse Voltage Stresses In Underground Cables

open access: yesJournal of Physics: Conference Series, 2023
Abstract Underground power cables are crucial for transmission and distribution. Lightning can stress their insulation, but not directly. So, impulse cable testing is studied. This research examines the cable’s transient response to standard and non-standard lightning impulse voltage waveforms.

Trends in thunderstorm days, lightning activity, squalls and the environmental factors in Hong Kong

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
This study analyses trends in Hong Kong's convective weather using long‐term observer‐based and shorter‐term instrument‐based data. Annual thunderstorm days increased significantly by 1.9 days decade−1 in 1947–2024, notably in June–September, consistent with increasingly favourable warm‐season environments for thunderstorms.

Analysis of polarity characteristics of lightning attachment and protection to wind turbine blades

open access: yesResults in Engineering
This study investigated the attachment of lightning polarity and protection to wind turbine blades. Positive-polarity switching impulse lightning exhibits a shielding effect on the wind turbine blade receptor, whereas negative-polarity switching impulse ...

Breakdown process on rod–rod air gap under oscillating lightning impulse voltage

open access: yesHigh Voltage, 2020
This study presents the discharge process on rod–rod electrodes under oscillating lightning impulse voltage. For this purpose, a measurement system has been developed to record the discharge currents at both rod electrodes simultaneously and to ...

Evaluation Methodology, Numerical Verification and Retrofilling Procedure for Power Transformers to Ensure K‐Class Flame Retardancy and Environmentally Friendly

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT With increasing demands for fire safety and environmental friendliness, retrofilling transformers with alternative insulating liquids has become a growing trend. However, retrofilling power transformers remains uncertain, as more residual mineral oil compromises K‐class flame retardancy, and its impact on environmental performance has yet to ...

The effect of multiple lightning impulse on the electrical characteristic of opto-isolator as lightning protective devices [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The behavior and performance of surge protective devices such as optoisolator under the application of multiple lightning voltage impulse are different from the single lightning voltage impulse test.

Development of ± 550 kV DC GIS Basin Insulator

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The basin insulator is a core component of the insulation system for ± 550 kV gas‐insulated switchgear (GIS). This paper, using a finite element method for multi‐physics simulations of electric–thermal coupling, determines a geometry suitable for the industrial production of ± 550 kV GIS basin insulators.
