Leader Propagation Characteristics Under Positive Lightning Impulse Voltages

open access: yesIEEE Access
Lightning strikes on transmission lines often generate overvoltage, which is the primary reason for insulator string flashover. This overvoltage, with a rapid rise time of just a few microseconds, causes leader propagation characteristics to differ ...

Governing Positive Energy Districts: The Role of Legitimation and Identity Across Residential and Industrial Contexts

open access: yesEnvironmental Policy and Governance, Volume 36, Issue 4, Page 751-767, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Increasing electricity demand from data centres, industrial applications, electric vehicles and domestic heating is creating pressure to develop electricity systems in many parts of the world, but especially in Western countries. In response to challenges such as grid congestion, interconnection queues and climate‐related hazards, network ...

Trends in thunderstorm days, lightning activity, squalls and the environmental factors in Hong Kong

open access: yesWeather, Volume 81, Issue 8, Page 248-257, August 2026.
This study analyses trends in Hong Kong's convective weather using long‐term observer‐based and shorter‐term instrument‐based data. Annual thunderstorm days increased significantly by 1.9 days decade−1 in 1947–2024, notably in June–September, consistent with increasingly favourable warm‐season environments for thunderstorms.

Climatology of Storm Characteristics for Sub‐Daily Heavy Precipitation in the Greater Alpine Region

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract Characterizing storms that generate heavy precipitation across different timescales is essential for parameterizing and assessing stochastic weather generators, evaluating climate models, enhancing risk management, and understanding climate change impacts.

Study on temperature rise prediction of ZnO varistors under multiple lightning strikes based on BP neural network and microscopic

open access: yesHigh Temperature Materials and Processes
ZnO varistors are widely used in the field of lightning protection. After being struck by lightning, ZnO varistors absorb heat, which can lead to temperature rise and even damage, posing a serious safety threat to electrical safety.

Flashover Performance Test with Lightning Impulse and Simulation Analysis of Different Insulators in a 110 kV Double-Circuit Transmission Tower

open access: yesEnergies, 2018
The flashover performance of insulators is the foundation of the calculation of precise lightning protection. The material and structure of an insulator affect its flashover performance but the research on the differences in the flashover performance of ...

Democratizing Hydroclimate Science for Just and Resilient Futures

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 14, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract Hydroclimatic extremes are intensifying, escalating risks to ecosystems, infrastructure, and vulnerable communities. Rapid technological innovation and scientific discovery offer powerful tools to address these challenges, yet a gap remains between hydroclimate knowledge production and its use in decision‐making.

Significantly Improved Electrical Breakdown Strength of Natural Ester Liquid Dielectrics by Doping Ultraviolet Absorbing Molecules

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate that molecules with maximum absorption wavelength corresponding to the first excitation energy of base liquid molecules are able to significantly improve the electrical performances of natural ester oils.

The loss of an Indigenous‐maintained She‐Oak woodland in southeast Australia

open access: yesGeographical Research, Volume 64, Issue 3, August 2026.
A 2600‐year multi‐proxy palaeoecological record (pollen, charcoal, and sediment) from Balfour Swamp, east Gippsland, reveals the persistence of an open, grassy She‐Oak woodland maintained by GunaiKurnai. This vegetation community, resilient to climatic variability and fire, was lost following the disruption of Aboriginal land management and replaced by
