Global distribution of winter lightning: a threat to wind turbines and aircraft [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Lightning is one of the major threats to multi-megawatt wind turbines and a concern for modern aircraft due to the use of lightweight composite materials. Both wind turbines and aircraft can initiate lightning, and very favorable conditions for lightning

Strategies for Assessing Post‐Wildfire Geomorphic Resilience in Semiarid Rivers

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We review and summarize diverse components of a catchment that can be monitored after wildfire to assess the geomorphic resilience of the river corridor in semiarid regions. We distinguish upland portions of river catchments from river corridors.

New Method for Single-Site Cloud-to-Ground Lightning Location Based on Tri-Pre Processing

open access: yesRemote Sensing
The single-site lightning detection system can provide timely and effective information on lightning activity in areas where a multi-site lightning network cannot be built.

Central Bank Digital Currencies, Financial Inclusion, and Privacy: A Normative Perspective

open access: yesSouthern Economic Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) are a digital form of a nation's money, issued by its central bank. As opposed to other forms of digital money, such as electronic bank balances or cryptocurrencies, they are centrally managed legal tender.

Lightning location system supervising Swedish power transmission network [PDF]

open access: yes
For electric utilities, the ability to prevent or minimize lightning damage on personnel and power systems is of great importance. Therefore, the Swedish State Power Board, has been using data since 1983 from a nationwide lightning location system (LLS ...

Telescope Array Lightning Location System [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of 35th International Cosmic Ray Conference — PoS(ICRC2017), 2017
The Telescope Array (TA) experiment detects air-showers induced by ultra high energy cosmic rays. The TA ground Surface particle Detector array (TASD) observed some short-duration bursts of air-shower like events. As reported at ICRC2015, these events are evidently correlated with lightning. Therefore, we have deployed detectors for lightning discharge

Bath Vibration During Open Eye Formation in a Physical Model of a Steelmaking Ladle

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
Using a physical model, this study shows that vibration measurements reliably predict open eye size in steelmaking ladles, offering a practical alternative to visual monitoring. Vessel vibrations stabilize faster than the open eye, except at high frequencies near the bottom.

Environmental Impact of Silicic Magmatism in Large Igneous Province Events

open access: yesGeophysical Monograph Series, Page 133-151., 2021

Exploring the links between Large Igneous Provinces and dramatic environmental impact

An emerging consensus suggests that Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) and Silicic LIPs (SLIPs) are a significant driver of dramatic global environmental and biological changes, including mass extinctions.
