Establishment of estimation lightning density method with lightning location system data

IEEE Power Engineering Society. 1999 Winter Meeting (Cat. No.99CH36233), 1999
The lightning strike density level in areas through which power transmission lines will pass is an important factor in designing lightning-proof transmission lines. Formerly, IKL (Tsokeraunic-Level) maps were used to evaluate lighting strike density.

Lightning characteristics based on date observed with Shanghai lightning location system

2016 International Conference on Condition Monitoring and Diagnosis (CMD), 2016
In this paper, an investigation into cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning activity data from the year of 2005 to 2014 collected by lightning location system (LLS) of Shanghai district is shown, including the ground flash density (GFD) maps of Shanghai City and comparison of annual lightning days (LDs) with thunderstorm days (TDs) collected by the Shanghai ...

Analysis of the French lightning locating system location accuracy

2015 International Symposium on Lightning Protection (XIII SIPDA), 2015
The location accuracy is one of the important parameters characterizing the performance of a lightning location system. It is also one of the most difficult to determine as the actual location of the discharge being located must be accurately known to achieve a reliable assessment of the real error.

Locations and Activities of Lightning Casualties

2018
In developed regions of the globe, lightning protection is provided by the ready availability of lightning-safe structures and fully enclosed metal-topped vehicles during most daily activities of most people. In developing economies, in contrast, the lack of such lightning-safe structures and vehicles makes lightning safety very difficult to achieve ...

VHF Direction Finder for Lightning Location

Journal of Applied Meteorology, 1973
Abstract A VHF direction finder based on the technique originally proposed by Oetzel and Pierce for the detection of sferics from lightning has been field tested. Cianos et al. reported a successful test of the same technique using sferics at 30 MHz. In our measurements, sferics in the frequency range 82–88 MHz are received by two antennas separated by

Lightning location system

2009

The Belgian Lightning Location System (BELLS)

2023
<p>The Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (RMI) has been operating a lightning detection network since 1992. Over the past years, the network has undergone upgrades at the level of soft- and hardware. The present-day Belgian Lightning Location System (BELLS) consists out of 14 LS7002 sensors, out of which five are owned by RMI and ...

Lightning Data Observed With Lightning Location System in Guang-Dong Province, China

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2004
This paper presents an investigation into cloud-to-ground lightning activity data collected by a lightning detection system in the Guang-Dong Province, the southernmost in China. Annual lightning days are acquired and ground flash density maps are constructed from the database, which contains the information of more than one million flashes.

Lightning location with linet in Europe

2010 30th International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), 2010
Starting some 10 years ago the ‘Sferics Research’ group at the Physics Department of the University of Munich developed methods for lightning location based on the latest available technologies. Nowcast GmbH, an off-spring of this project, installed in 2006 the new system LINET in Europe and begun full operation.

Lightning Warning and Locator Systems

1993
During the 1991 U.S. Open golf tournament at Hazelton National Golf Club, in Chasca, Minnesota, lightning struck and killed a spectator and injured five others. After the tragedy, newspapers printed their reports under such headlines as “golf must take steps to warn fans of storms” and “lightning detector no guarantee of golf tournament safety.”
