The Error is the Feature: how to Forecast Lightning using a Model Prediction Error
Despite the progress within the last decades, weather forecasting is still a challenging and computationally expensive task. Current satellite-based approaches to predict thunderstorms are usually based on the analysis of the observed brightness ...

Abstract This article examines how salient sustainability risks from near‐miss natural disasters influence board composition. Using a difference‐in‐differences design, I find that firms located in counties neighboring disaster‐affected areas significantly increase the presence of directors with sustainability expertise following the disaster.

Determination and representation of electric charge distributions associated with adverse weather conditions [PDF]
Algorithms are presented for determining the size and location of electric charges which model storm systems and lightning strikes. The analysis utilizes readings from a grid of ground level field mills and geometric constraints on parameters to arrive ...

Axial muscle‐fibre orientations in larval zebrafish
In 4 days post‐fertilization zebrafish larvae, the fast axial muscle fibres follow helical trajectories that taper towards the tail. Adjacent muscle fibres form substantial angles relative to each other to accommodate this pattern. Using a novel semi‐automatic method, we quantified 3D fibre angles over the whole muscle volume.

Rapid postfire color shift in a Mediterranean lizard
We quantified dorsal luminosity and color composition of Psammodromus algirus in burned and adjacent unburned habitats at different times since fire. Lizards inhabiting recently burned areas displayed lighter dorsal coloration, particularly during the early stages of postfire succession, with the effect being more pronounced in larger individuals ...

ABSTRACT Microbial enzymes expressed in plants add new functionalities but occasionally trigger undesirable immune responses. Phanerochaete carnosa glucuronoyl esterase (PcGCE) hydrolyses the bond between lignin and 4‐O‐methyl‐α‐D‐glucuronic acid substituent of glucuronoxylan.

Lightning discharge identification system [PDF]
A system for differentiating between cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning discharges is described which includes an electric field antenna that senses the rate of charge of an electric field produced by a lightning discharge.

ABSTRACT Quinoa is a grain crop with excellent nutritional properties that has attracted global attention for its potential contribution to future food security in a changing climate. Despite its long history of cultivation, quinoa has been improved little by modern breeding and is a niche crop outside its native cultivation area.

ABSTRACT Laws play some role in explanations: at the very least, they somehow connect what is explained, or the explanandum, to what explains, or the explanans. Thus, thermodynamical laws connect the match's being struck and its lightning, so that the former causes the latter; and laws about set formation connect Socrates' existence with {Socrates}'s ...

On-orbit Validation of the Geolocation Accuracy of the GOES-16 Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) Flashes Using Ground-based Laser Beacons [PDF]
As part of the geolocation accuracy assessment of lightning flashes detected by the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) on the GOES-16 and GOES-17 satellites (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite), two satellite laser ranging stations ...
