Artificial neural networks in lightning location systems

1st International Symposium on Neuro-Fuzzy Systems, AT '96. Conference Report, 2002
In this work, we introduce the use of self organizing Kohonen maps, a type of artificial neural network, for lightning electromagnetic waveform classification. We show how this natural classification can be used to discriminate lightning waveforms in a noisy environment.

The Characteristics of the Lightning Locating System and Its Application in Lightning Risk Assessment

2009 First International Conference on Information Science and Engineering, 2009
In this paper, we primarily discuss how the lightning locating system (LLS) working. We present the method of lightning risk assessment and the process of the data received from the LLS sensors. Also discussed will be the practical applications in lightning risk assessment.

Lightning location and storm severity display system

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 1991
A unique lightning location and lightning storm severity assessment display system designed and developed at the Detroit Edison Company is described. The design is driven by the need to provide a real time lightning storm severity information display for electric utility operations that includes storm warning, storm tracking, storm dispatching, and ...

A statistical study using lightning data in Portugal from a Lightning Location System

2016 33rd International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), 2016
This paper presents a study on lightning statistics over the continental territory of Portugal during a period from 2003 to 2014, using the data collected by the national Lightning Location System. Being part of the EUCLID (European Cooperation of Lightning Detection) project, this European grid is presented and its performance validated over the ...

The Met Office's upgraded lightning location system

Physics and Chemistry of the Earth, 1998
Abstract The Met. Office (UK NMS) has operated a VLF ‘arrival time difference’ thunderstorm location system since 1986. This system's hardware is currently being upgraded and its software enhanced. Hardware improvements will allow the system to operate automatically and increase the number of lightning strokes that may be processed per hour to ...

Study of the Winter Lightning Ground Flash Density Investigated by the Lightning Location Systems

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2006
A network of lightning location systems covering the entire Japanese Archipelago has been operational since the late 1980s. However, the operational records appear to be distorted relative to winter lightning flash densities. The maximum flash density registered was 0.3 flashes/km/sup 2/ per one winter season, a mere one-tenth of the corresponding ...
