Continuous broadband lightning VHF mapping array using MUSIC algorithm
Atmospheric Research, 2020Abstract In order to improve the mapping quality of lightning discharge processes, a mapping approach by applying multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm to direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation of lightning very high frequency (VHF) radiation sources is proposed (MUSIC-VHF method) and validated.

Two Methods for Correcting Range-Dependent Limitations of Lightning Mapping Arrays
Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology, 2018AbstractLightning Mapping Arrays (LMAs) detect very high frequency (VHF) radiation produced by lightning as it propagates; however, VHF source detection efficiency drops off rapidly with range from the centers of the arrays, which results in a maximum of source points over the center of the network for large datasets. Using data from nearly one billion

AbstractHigh‐speed video (46,000 frames per second) and lightning‐mapping‐array (LMA) data are correlated to determine three‐dimensional properties of in‐cloud lightning leaders (altitudes ranging from 2.78 to 3.81 km) observed in a rocket‐and‐wire triggered lightning flash. Three positive leaders were observed with speeds ranging from 6.1 × 104 to 1.0

New visualization and analysis tools for 3D Lightning Mapping Array data
The 3D Lightning Mapping Array (LMA) is a regional network of VHF antenna stations spaced 5-50 km apart that detect lightning pulses in the 60-66 MHz band. The pulses are timed by GPS. Time-of-arrival reconstruction results in 3D pulse locations, revealing the lightning leader channels (of negative polarity) inside the cloud and toward ground.Oscar van der Velde +5 more
