Characterizing Charge Structure in Central Argentina Thunderstorms During RELAMPAGO Utilizing a New Charge Layer Polarity Identification Method

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, 2021
A new automated method to retrieve charge layer polarity from flashes, named Chargepol, is presented in this paper. Using data from the NASA Lightning Mapping Array (LMA) deployed during the Remote sensing of Electrification, Lightning, And Mesoscale ...

Triggered Calcium Lightning Programs Cochlear Development

open access: yesExploration, EarlyView.
Summary: Before the onset of hearing, the developing inner ear generates spontaneous calcium signals that are thought to guide maturation. In this study, we discovered a rapid and widespread calcium flash—dubbed “Ca2+ lightning”—originating from supporting cells beneath the sensory hair cells, which triggers coordinated calcium waves across the entire ...

A Review of Mechanical Reinforcement and Piezoresistive Self‐Sensing in Carbon Nanotube Fiber Composites

open access: yesPolymer Composites, EarlyView.
PSPP‐TRL mapping of CNT‐modified CFRP literature, with four recurring confusions resolved and five scale‐up problems quantified. ABSTRACT Carbon nanotube‐modified fiber composites are often presented as a route to stronger, tougher, and self‐sensing structural materials.

SAETTA: high-resolution 3-D mapping of the total lightning activity in the Mediterranean Basin over Corsica, with a focus on a mesoscale convective system event [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Measurement Techniques, 2019
Deployed on the mountainous island of Corsica for thunderstorm monitoring purposes in the Mediterranean Basin, SAETTA is a network of 12 LMA (Lightning Mapping Array, designed by New Mexico Tech, USA) stations that allows the 3-D mapping of very high ...

Analysis of charge transport during lightning using balloon‐borne electric field sensors and Lightning Mapping Array [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2007
Recently, wide band measurements of the electric field near a lightning flash have been obtained by a balloon‐borne electric field sonde or Esonde. This paper develops new techniques for analyzing lightning‐associated charge transport in a thundercloud by using both the Esonde data and simultaneous Lightning Mapping Array (LMA) measurements of VHF ...

Characterization of synoptic environment for mesoscale convective systems over South Korea using ERA5 reanalysis data

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
In this study, the synoptic conditions for modes of mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) in South Korea are generalized based on composite analysis. The preferred precipitation region, synoptic patterns, moisture transport, sea surface temperature and thermodynamic and dynamic instabilities are characterized according to four modes: convective cells (CC)

Analysis of the Relationship Between the Morphological Characteristics of Lightning Channels and Turbulent Dynamics Based on the Localization of VHF Radiation Sources

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Lightning channel morphology depends on the thunderstorm cloud charge structure, which in turn is influenced by the thunderstorm dynamics. In this paper, based on three‐dimensional radiation source localization data from the Lightning Mapping Array and ...

A new electric field mill array with each of the mill’s rotor controlled precisely by a GPS module: Equipment and initial results

open access: yesEarth and Planetary Physics
We have newly designed an electrostatic sensor, called an electric field mill (EFM), to simplify the estimation of the charge position and charge amount transferred by lightning discharges.

Bath Vibration During Open Eye Formation in a Physical Model of a Steelmaking Ladle

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
Using a physical model, this study shows that vibration measurements reliably predict open eye size in steelmaking ladles, offering a practical alternative to visual monitoring. Vessel vibrations stabilize faster than the open eye, except at high frequencies near the bottom.

Organic Representation as a Critical Media Approach to Leadership Studies in Popular Culture

open access: yesNew Directions for Student Leadership, Volume 2025, Issue 185, Page 75-80, Spring 2025.
ABSTRACT This article applies the critical media concept of organic representation to leadership studies as an analytic of how various creators in popular culture today are not just writing inclusive storytelling but, more notably, modeling new modes of production and self‐presentation that are actively challenging hegemonic industry practices and ...
