A Tale of Two Layers: The Mutual Relationship between Bitcoin and Lightning Network

open access: yesRisks, 2020
A major concern of the adoption and scalability of Blockchain technologies refers to their efficient use for payments. In this work, we analyze how Lightning Network (LN), which represents a relevant infrastructural novelty, is influenced by the market ...

Climatology and Trends of Sub‐Daily Precipitation Extremes in Croatia

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Sub‐daily extreme precipitation indices reveal pronounced spatial variability, with the highest intensities and frequencies across the Adriatic region and the highlands. Seasonal and diurnal patterns highlight distinct regional behaviour, including summer maxima over the continental interior and nocturnal or early‐morning peaks along the Adriatic coast.

A Formally Verified Lightning Network

open access: yes
In this work we use formal verification to prove that the Lightning Network (LN), the most prominent scaling technique for Bitcoin, always safeguards the funds of honest users. We provide a custom implementation of (a simplification of) LN, express the desired security goals and, for the first time, we provide a machine checkable proof that they are ...

Ant routing algorithm for the Lightning Network

open access: yesCoRR, 2018
We propose a decentralized routing algorithm that can be implemented in Bitcoin Lightning Network. All nodes in the network contribute equally to path searching. The algorithm is inspired from ant path searching algorithms.

Fire‐induced shifts in activity patterns of predators and prey in the Brazilian Pantanal

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
Using camera trap data, we observed that 5 of 6 prey species showed statistically significant changes in temporal activity patterns, while jaguars were the only predator species to adjust activity when comparing pre‐fire and post‐fire periods in an isolated rocky formation in the Pantanal region.

High-Resolution Lightning Detection and Possible Relationship with Rainfall Events over the Central Mediterranean Area

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2019
Lightning activity is usually associated with precipitations events and represents a possible indicator of climate change, even contributing to its increase with the production of NOx gases.

Management of Absent Upper Esophageal Sphincter Opening After Neurological Injury

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
This study evaluated the effects of swallowing therapy and cricopharyngeus (CP) muscle surgery on upper esophageal sphincter (UES) opening, oral intake, and airway protection in patients with absent UES opening following neurological injury. CP‐targeted surgeries were associated with improved bolus passage and oral intake, but persistent aspiration ...

A European lightning density analysis using 5 years of ATDnet data [PDF]

open access: yesNatural Hazards and Earth System Sciences, 2014
The Met Office has operated a very low frequency (VLF) lightning location network since 1987. The long-range capabilities of this network, referred to in its current form as ATDnet, allow for relatively continuous detection efficiency across Europe ...

Effect of Protective Coating Thickness on Ultrasonic Guided Wave Propagation in Plate‐Like Structures

open access: yesMacromolecular Symposia, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Ultrasonic Guided Waves (UGWs) are widely employed for the inspection and monitoring of plate‐like structures due to their long‐range propagation capability and sensitivity to structural and material changes. In real aerospace components, however, structural surfaces are commonly covered by protective layers, such as coatings or metallic films,
