Lightning Often Strikes Twice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Contrary to popular misconception, lightning often strikes the same place twice. Certain conditions are just ripe for a bolt of electricity to come zapping down; and a lightning strike is powerful enough to do a lot of damage wherever it hits.

Modeling of Lightning Strike Events, and it’s Correlational with Power Outages in South-West Coast, Nigeria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This paper aimed to model lightning strike events and evaluate its correlation with power outages in a Nigerian power distribution system. A specified coastal distribution network of southwest Nigeria was selected as a case study.

An explanation of trans-ionospheric pulse pairs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Trans-ionospheric pulse pairs are the most powerful natural radio signals on the Earth and associated with lightning. They have been discovered for two decades by satellites, but their origin still remains elusive. Here we attribute these radio signals to relativistic electrons produced by cloud-to-ground lightning.

Is Fintech Good for Bank Performance? The Case of Mobile Money in the East African Community

open access: yesInternational Journal of Finance &Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Mobile money, a technology‐driven innovation in financial services, has profoundly penetrated the financial landscape in Sub‐Saharan Africa, including banks. Yet, besides anecdotal evidence, little is known about whether mobile money adoption enhances or worsens bank performance.

Effects of boreal ground layer shrubs and bryophytes on the diversity, biomass and composition of lichen communities across contrasting ecosystems

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
There has been much recent interest in understanding how abiotic factors such as light, nutrients, and soil moisture affect the composition and biomass of lichen communities. Meanwhile, whether and how ground layer vegetation such as bryophytes and shrubs also influence lichen communities have received much less attention, particularly regarding how ...

Analysis of the failure mode of surge protector under multi-pulse lightning strikes and its mechanism

open access: yesEnergy Reports, 2022
This paper proposes a special disconnector for surge protector (SPD) with the ability to pass large pulse currents under multiple pulses, which has been verified to solve the problem of SPD fire and combustion under multiple pulses in engineering ...

The missing woodland story: Implications of 1700 years of stand‐scale change on ‘naturalness’ and managing remnant broadleaved woodlands

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Longer‐term perspectives—equivalent to the lifespans of long‐lived trees—are required to fully inform perceptions of ‘naturalness’ used in woodland conservation and management. Stand‐scale dynamics of an old growth temperate woodland are reconstructed using palaeoecological data.

Environmental Impact of Silicic Magmatism in Large Igneous Province Events

open access: yesGeophysical Monograph Series, Page 133-151., 2021

Exploring the links between Large Igneous Provinces and dramatic environmental impact

An emerging consensus suggests that Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) and Silicic LIPs (SLIPs) are a significant driver of dramatic global environmental and biological changes, including mass extinctions.
