The Threefold Essence of Consciousness: Brentano versus Pfänder

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Philosophy, EarlyView.
Abstract Building on Uriah Kriegel's recent work on the varieties of consciousness, I consider the question of how many irreducible and fundamental kinds of consciousness there are. This is the project of a fundamental classification of consciousness (C‐taxonomy), which will be approached with reference to two figures from the (early) phenomenological ...

Thunderstorm total lightning activity behavior associated with transmission line trip events of power system

open access: yesnpj Climate and Atmospheric Science
High-voltage transmission lines are susceptible targets for lightning strikes. It is an interesting topic how the trip event of transmission line is related to the area, location, and intensity of thunderstorms occurring at that time and that place ...

Hindu Avatāra and Christian Kenosis: A New Approach in Comparative Theology1

open access: yesThe Heythrop Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Within comparative theology, the Hindu doctrine of avatāra has traditionally been compared to the Christian doctrine of the incarnation, both of which are expressions of divine embodiment in creaturely form. Leviathans and Liberation: Did Whaling Contribute to the Decline of Slavery?

open access: yesInternational Social Science Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We test the hypothesis slavery started declining in the United States not due to fossil fuel‐driven industrialization but the exploitation of the bioenergy reserves of the world's largest animals. We predict the population in slavery in US states from 1790 to 1840 as a function of the recorded whaling harvest.

Advances in lightning protection that satisfies contemporary standards [PDF]

open access: yes
Described here are the LEC, Inc. Spline Ball Ionizer (trademark) (SBI) and the Spline Ball Terminal (trademark) (SBT) families and how their use in a conventional lightning protection system can achieve strike prevention in a conventional setting.

Imaging malaria parasites across scales and time

open access: yesJournal of Microscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract The idea that disease is caused at the cellular level is so fundamental to us that we might forget the critical role microscopy played in generating and developing this insight. Visually identifying diseased or infected cells lays the foundation for any effort to curb human pathology.
