Strike: Stream Cipher Based on Stochastic Lightning Strike Behaviour

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2023
There is an increasing need for secure and fast encryption algorithms to support applications and communication protocols, and business models. In this paper, we present an alternative stream cipher (Strike) inspired by the stochastic behaviour of ...

The impact of lightning strike to multi‐blade on the lightning overvoltage and stresses of arresters in offshore wind farm

open access: yesIET Renewable Power Generation, 2021
This paper establishes a complete lightning overvoltage simulation of an offshore wind farm, considering the electromagnetic effects including the blade, the tower and the power cable based on transmission‐line theory.

Research on lightning transient distribution characteristics of cable-stayed bridges

open access: yes暴雨灾害, 2023
Bridges are usually located at the junction of land and water, where the surrounding area is open terrain, making them to be easily damaged by lightning strikes.

Tracking canopy gaps in mangroves remotely using deep learning

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, Volume 8, Issue 6, Page 890-903, December 2022., 2022
Canopy gaps greatly contribute to mangrove forest turnover and rejuvenation. While gap monitoring is usually performed by field and aerial surveys, we propose a novel method based on deep learning to achieve this automatically from very‐high‐resolution satellite imagery.

Experimental and Numerical Study on Residual Strength of Honeycomb Sandwich Composite Structure after Lightning Strike

open access: yesAerospace, 2022
Honeycomb sandwich composite structures are widely used in various aircraft structures due to their unique performance. However, honeycomb sandwich composite structures are prone to lightning damage that threatens the structure safety.

Theory of ball lightning [PDF]

open access: yesSci. Rep. 6, 28263 (2016), 2014
We present a comprehensive theory on the formation of ball lightning, a luminous sphere sometimes observed after normal lightning. In a ball lightning event, a relativistic electron bunch can be produced by the stepped leader of lightning and coherently emit high-power microwave when striking the ground.

Lightning attachment characteristic of wind turbine generator: Experimental investigation and prediction method based on simulations

open access: yesWind Energy, Volume 26, Issue 2, Page 131-144, February 2023., 2023
Abstract As the height of wind turbine increases, the lightning strike accident has become a non‐negligible issue. In this paper, the lightning attachment characteristic of a 2‐MW wind turbine generator (WTG) is investigated using a model with a reduced scale of 100.

Three‐phase overvoltage at lightning strike point due to direct triggered lightning to the phase wire of 10 kV power distribution line

open access: yesIET Generation, Transmission & Distribution, 2022
This paper reports the observation results of three‐phase overvoltage at the lightning strike point of a 1.5 km, 10 kV power distribution line that was struck directly by rocket triggered lightning to its phase wire C.

Straight Lightning as a Signature of Macroscopic Dark Matter [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. D 103, 063024 (2021), 2020
Macroscopic dark matter (macros) is a broad class of alternative candidates to particle dark matter. These candidates would transfer energy to matter primarily through elastic scattering. A sufficiently large macro passing through the atmosphere would produce a straight channel of ionized plasma.

Modeling and analysis approaches for small‐signal stability assessment of power‐electronic‐dominated systems

open access: yesWIREs Energy and Environment, Volume 12, Issue 1, January/February 2023., 2023
Application of small‐signal analysis tools for power‐electronic‐dominated systems. Abstract The stability, operation, and control of power networks have been challenged due to the increased penetration of power electronic converters. New instability phenomena have appeared due to the interaction of the power converter controllers with other power ...
