Optimizing germination and cultivation of edible halophytes using effluents from an IMTA system

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract BACKGROUND Halophytes offer nature‐based solutions to food insecurity and soil degradation, while their integration into integrated multi‐trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems promotes circular economy practices. This study aimed to optimize the germination and cultivation of edible halophytic species, namely Limbarda crithmoides, Suaeda vera and

Deep Eutectic Solvents for Pretreatment of Lignocellulose Biomass: Physical Properties, Solubility Mechanisms, and Their Interactions.

open access: yesChemical Reviews
As the most accessible and abundant renewable resource on earth, lignocellulosic biomass mainly consists of cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin with a small amount of protein, pectin, minerals, and extractives (e.g., tannins, lipids, and resins ...

Disclosing the production of fungal chitinases and proteases using insect by‐products as substrates in solid‐state fermentation

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract BACKGROUND The world population is projected to reach nearly 9.7 billion by 2050, significantly increasing the demand for novel and sustainable protein sources. Edible insects, such as Tenebrio molitor, emerge as promising alternatives due to their high nutritional value, but adult insects and frass are direct and abundant by‐products of this ...

Ecosystem retrogression enhances cross‐domain microbial stability and increases the genetic potential for nutrient cycling

open access: yesmLife, EarlyView.
Abstract Ecosystem retrogression drives nutrient depletion, reduced productivity, and profound reorganization of soil microbial communities. Using amplicon sequencing and genome‐resolved metagenomics, we examined how cross‐domain microbial networks and functional gene potential respond to long‐term phosphorus and nitrogen limitation along the well ...

Kinetic Study of an H-ZSM-5/Al–MCM-41 Catalyst Mixture and Its Application in Lignocellulose Biomass Pyrolysis

open access: yesEnergy & Fuels, 2019
The use of H-ZSM-5 and Al–MCM-41 in a two-stage system of mesoporous and microporous catalysts has been proved to improve the quality of bio-oil. Information about biomass pyrolysis kinetics is important to evaluate biomass as a feedstock for fuel or ...

Sustainable PEG‐Based Shape‐Stabilized Phase Change Materials Using Raw Pine Cone as a Low‐Cost Filler and Graphite for Enhanced Thermal Conductivity

open access: yesPolymer Engineering &Science, EarlyView.
Preparation of sustainable PEG‐based ssPCMs using a PC‐based low‐cos filler and G as a thermal enhancer. PEG 6000 is incorporated into the PC/G matrix through mixing to obtain the shape‐stabilized PCM for thermal energy storage applications. ABSTRACT This study investigates the development of a novel shape‐stabilized phase change material (ssPCM ...

The Nature of Lignin and Implications for Its Technical Use as a Source for Biogenic Aromatics—A Review

open access: yesSustainable Chemistry
The composite material lignocellulose makes up the majority of biomass on earth and is characterized by a high biological and chemical resistance, which is essentially caused by the phenylpropanoid polymer lignin.

Direct extraction of functional whitened lignocellulose from wood via isocyanate modification in water–ethanol mixture

open access: yesPolymer International, EarlyView.
Direct extraction of lignocellulose from wood derivatives was achieved by introducing a bulky isocyanate substituent to lignin in a water–ethanol mixture. This process exploits the tunable solvent affinity of lignin to achieve its whitening, enabling the isolation of lignocellulose.

Advancements and Challenges in Second‐ and Third‐Generation Biofuels: A Comparative Analysis of Lignocellulosic and Algal Feedstocks

open access: yesSafety Science and Technology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Advanced biofuels derived from nonfood biomass are increasingly recognized as strategic components of low‐carbon energy systems, particularly for sectors where direct electrification remains difficult. Second‐generation biofuels from lignocellulosic residues and third‐generation biofuels from algal and aquatic biomass offer complementary ...

Structural insights into xyloglucan recognition by an ABC transporter from a Gram‐positive, thermophilic bacterium

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Athe_2052 is an ABC transporter substrate‐binding protein that recognizes xyloglucan heptasaccharide (XXXG), a soluble breakdown product of plant xyloglucan. The crystal structure of Athe_2052, together with binding assays and computational modeling, shows how XXXG is recognized by this sugar transporter.
