Abstract We show that semiparametric profile likelihoods, where the nuisance parameter has been profiled out, behave like ordinary likelihoods in that they have a quadratic expansion. In this expansion the score function and the Fisher information are replaced by the efficient score function and efficient Fisher information.

Likelihood and quasi - likelihood estimation of transition probabilities
Discussiones Mathematicae Probability and Statistics, 2023Summary: Two approaches to the problem of estimation of transition probabilities are considered. The approach by \textit{P. McCullagh} and \textit{J. A. Nelder} [Generalized linear models. 2nd ed. (1989; Zbl 0744.62098)], based on the independent model and the quasi-likelihood function, is compared with the approach based on the marginal model and the ...

Likelihood and Inconsistency, , , ,
Cladistics, 1999Parsimony can be inconsistent, but not maximum likelihood—likelihood advocates often say. This difference and conclusions drawn from it have provided the main reasons advanced by likelihoodists against the use of parsimony. Recent statistical research, however, shows that maximum likelihood estimation of phylogenetic trees can become inconsistent in ...

The maximum likelihood method is a popular statistical inferential procedure widely used in many areas to obtain the estimates of the unknown parameters of a population of interest. This chapter gives a brief description of the important concepts underlying the maximum likelihood method, the definition of the key components, the basic theory of the ...

Summary: For a given statistic, nested bootstrap calculations in conjunction with kernel smoothing methods are used to calculate estimates of the density of the statistic for a range of parameter values. These density estimates are then used to generate values of an analogue of a likelihood function, a whole function being obtained by curve-fitting ...
