Environmental niche models improve species identification in DNA barcoding

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 12, Page 2343-2358, December 2024.
Abstract Recent advances in DNA barcoding have immeasurably advanced global biodiversity research in the last two decades. However, inherent limitations in barcode sequences, such as hybridization, introgression or incomplete lineage sorting can lead to misidentifications when relying solely on barcode sequences.

Moths versus Bees: Contrasts in Habitat Preferences Across Barrens of the Northeastern USA

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 11, November 2024.
We investigated the response of bee vs. moth communities to abiotic and vegetation drivers in barrens across the Northeast USA. Bee and moth communities contrasted in their habitat preferences for abundance and species richness, but not for the Shannon‐Wiener Diversity Index. Our results suggest that barrens management for both closed and open canopies

Replication of the densovirus of Casphalia extranea (Lepidoptera Limacodidae) on an established cell line [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990

Species traits to guide moth conservation in anthropogenic regions: A multi‐species approach using distribution trends in Flanders (northern Belgium)

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, Volume 17, Issue 6, Page 1016-1032, November 2024.
By applying Multi‐Species Change Indices to over 1.8 million citizen scientist observations from 1980 to 2022, we assessed the distributional changes of macro‐moths in Flanders (northern Belgium)—a highly anthropogenic region in Northwest Europe—by linking temporal trends to 10 key ecological and life history traits.

Nearctic \u3ci\u3eAcleris\u3c/i\u3e: Resurrection of \u3ci\u3eA. Stadiana\u3c/i\u3e and a Revised Identity for \u3ci\u3eA. Semiannula\u3c/i\u3e (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Type study showed that Acleris stadiana (Barnes & Busck), currently considered a junior synonym of A. semiannula (Robinson), is in fact a distinct taxon. Although superficially similar, these taxa differ markedly in genital structure.

First comprehensive higher level phylogeny of Zygaenidae (Lepidoptera) including estimated ages of the major lineages and a review of known zygaenid fossils

open access: yesSystematic Entomology, Volume 49, Issue 4, Page 610-623, October 2024.
Using 30 gene fragments and sampling nearly 50% of the genera, we provide a well‐resolved phylogeny of Zygaenidae; Zygaenidae are recovered as monophyletic as are most of the subfamilies. The lineage leading to the extant Zygaenidae diverged in Late Cretaceous, while the divergence among the subfamilies occurred a little before the Cretaceous–Paleogene
