Mathematics and the Limits of Language
Abstract This chapter offers a mathematical perspective on the question of linguistic idealism in order to challenge the claim that for the world to exist it must be expressible. On the basis of three mathematical case studies—modus ponens, the consistency of mathematics, and statistical models of the prime numbers—the chapter draws a ...openaire +1 more source
Deleuze and the Limits of Mathematical Time
Deleuze Studies, 2008In Creative Evolution, Bergson argues that life, the so-called inner becoming of things, does not develop linearly, in accordance with a geometrical, formal model. For Bergson as for classical science, matter occupies a plane of immanence defined by natural laws.

Towards Limit Computable Mathematics
2002The notion of Limit-Computable Mathematics (LCM) will be introduced. LCM is a fragment of classical mathematics in which the law of excluded middle is restricted to ?20-formulas. We can give an accountable computational interpretation to the proofs of LCM. The computational content of LCM-proofs is given by Gold's limiting recursive functions, which is

The Limits of Text in Greek Mathematics
2005This article argues for a limited role of the text in Greek mathematics, in two senses of “text”: the verbal as opposed to the visual; and the literate as opposed to the “oral” (understood in a wide sense). The Greek mathematical argument proceeds not within the confines of the verbal alone, but essentially relies upon diagrams.
