Simple loop conjecture for limit groups

open access: yes, 2013
There are noninjective maps from surface groups to limit groups that don't kill any simple closed curves. As a corollary, there are noninjective all-loxodromic representations of surface groups to SL(2,C) that don't kill any simple closed curves ...

Simulation of Inhomogeneous Refractive Index Fields Induced by Hot Tailored Forming Components

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents a simulation model for simulating inhomogeneous refractive index fields (IRIF) in hot‐forged components, accounting for thermal influences and complex geometries. Through this simulation, a priori knowledge about the propagation of the IRIF can be obtained, allowing for the positioning of the component or an optical measurement ...

A Novel Approach on Rapid Alloy Development of Tool Steels for Laser Powder Bed Fusion by In Situ Alloying

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A novel approach for alloy development in laser powder bed fusion is introduced. Instead of producing massive samples of one composition at a time, prepressed powder bed samples produced from powder mixtures are processed. Guidelines for the selection of precursor powders are developed.

Changes in Support Intervention Practices in Mathematics for 5-Year-Old Preschool Education: The Importance of a Collaborative and Reflective Process

open access: yesEducation Sciences
Preschool mathematics support remains insufficient, which can limit children’s skill development and impact their long-term academic success. This study explores how collaboration between researchers and teachers can enhance these practices.

Target refractions in bilateral monofocal pseudophakia: analysis of a mathematical model

open access: yesAfrican Vision and Eye Health, 2013
A recent paper proposes a model for suitable target refractions for monofocal pseudophakic monovision.  The purpose of this paper is to examine the mathematics that underpins the theory.

Computing A Glimpse of Randomness

open access: yes, 2002
A Chaitin Omega number is the halting probability of a universal Chaitin (self-delimiting Turing) machine. Every Omega number is both computably enumerable (the limit of a computable, increasing, converging sequence of rationals) and random (its binary ...

Enhancing Corrosion Resistance and Mechanical Strength of 3D‐Printed Iron Polylactic Acid for Marine Applications via Laser Surface Texturing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Laser surface texturing significantly improves the corrosion resistance and mechanical strength of 3D‐printed iron polylactic acid (Ir‐PLA) for marine applications. Optimal laser parameters reduce corrosion by 80% and enhance tensile strength by 25% and ductility by 15%.

Statistical Distributions of Morphologically Classified Defects in Metal Additive Manufacturing with Implications for Fatigue Life Prediction

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Morphological features of three defect types in metal additive manufacturing (AM)—lack of fusion, keyhole, and gas‐entrapped pores—are statistically characterized using best‐fit distributions evaluated via coefficient‐of‐determination, Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, and quantile–quantile plots.
