Information limits for detecting a subhypergraph [PDF]
We consider the problem of recovering a subhypergraph based on an observed adjacency tensor corresponding to a uniform hypergraph. The uniform hypergraph is assumed to contain a subset of vertices called as subhypergraph. The edges restricted to the subhypergraph are assumed to follow a different probability distribution than other edges.

Material Limitations on the Detection Limit in Refractometry [PDF]
We discuss the detection limit for refractometric sensors relying on high-Q optical cavities and show that the ultimate classical detection limit is given by min {Δn} ≳ η with n + iη being the complex refractive index of the material under refractometric investigation.

rox: A Statistical Model for Regression with Missing Values
High-dimensional omics datasets frequently contain missing data points, which typically occur due to concentrations below the limit of detection (LOD) of the profiling platform.

Capacity limits in face detection [PDF]
Face detection is a prerequisite for further face processing, such as extracting identity or semantic information. Those later processes appear to be subject to strict capacity limits, but the location of the bottleneck is unclear. In particular, it is not known whether the bottleneck occurs before or after face detection.

Compact hollow waveguide mid-infrared gas sensor for simultaneous measurements of ambient CO2 and water vapor [PDF]
A compact, sensitive and stable hollow waveguide (HWG) mid-infrared gas sensor, based on gas absorption lines using wavelength modulation spectroscopy with a second harmonic (WMS-2f) detection scheme, was developed for simultaneous measurements of ...

Quantum-optical communication rates through an amplifying random medium [PDF]
We study the competing effects of stimulated and spontaneous emission on the information capacity of an amplifying disordered waveguide. At the laser threshold the capacity reaches a "universal" limit, independent of the degree of disorder.

A comparison of DNA/RNA extraction protocols for high-throughput sequencing of microbial communities
One goal of microbial ecology researchers is to capture the maximum amount of information from all organisms in a sample. The recent COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the RNA virus SARS-CoV-2, has highlighted a gap in traditional DNA-based protocols ...
