Epizooic Diatoms on the Cerci of Ephemeroptera (Caenidae) Naiads [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Using scanning electron microscopy, epizooic diatoms were observed growing on the cerci of Caenis amica Hagen naiads (Ephemeroptera, Caenidae). Meridion circulare (Greville) C.

PNNL‐TUNAMELT: Toward automating the detection of interactions with marine energy devices using acoustic camera sensors

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract Acoustic cameras, or imaging sonars, are often used to monitor marine energy sites in regions where the water is too dark or turbid for optical sensing. To do so more effectively, scientists are investigating automated detection methodologies to use on these data.

Sediment trap preservative choice impacts particle‐associated microbial community composition

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract Understanding and quantifying the microbial contribution to particulate organic matter (POM) flux and carbon cycling in the ocean relies largely on the collection of sinking POM. A critical aspect of evaluating microbial communities on sediment trap‐collected POM is their preservation until recovery and sample processing.

Freezing and chemical preservatives alter the stable isotope values of carbon and nitrogen of the Asiatic clam (Corbicula fluminea) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We tested the impacts of most common sample preservation methods used for aquatic sample materials on the stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen in clams, a typical baseline indicator organism for many aquatic food web studies utilising stable ...

The IceShark, an effective method for sampling plankton under sea ice

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract Seasonal sea ice plays a crucial role in shaping coastal ecosystem dynamics throughout the circumpolar region. Of particular interest to oceanographers is the ice‐ocean interface which functions as a multidimensional habitat, supporting both sympagic algae and pelagic phytoplankton in the under‐ice surface waters.

Association between periphyton and bioflocs systems in intensive culture of juvenile Nile tilapia

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Animal Sciences, 2016
The present work aimed at determining the effects of the association between the periphyton-based system with the bioflocs-based system in the intensive culture of juvenile Nile tilapia (1.56 ± 0.07 g; 72 fish m-3), on variables of water quality, growth ...

Chemical stabilization of glass microfiber type F filters for measuring particulate phosphorus using the extra high‐temperature dry combustion method

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract Accurate quantification of particulate phosphorus is critical for understanding biogeochemical processes in aquatic systems. Extra high‐temperature dry combustion at 800°C improves phosphorus recovery by ~ 11% compared to lower‐temperature methods.
