Modeling line-commutated converter HVDC transmission systems using dynamic phasors

open access: yes, 2014
This thesis develops the dynamic phasor model of a line-commutated converter (LCC) high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system. The mathematical definition and properties of dynamic phasors are utilized to model both the dc-side and the ac-side of a LCC-HVDC transmission system as well as 6-pulse Graetz bridge, which is the building block of

An Accurate Impedance Model of Line Commutated Converter With Variable Commutation Overlap

IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2022
This paper proposes an accurate impedance model of line commutated converter (LCC) in the stationary frame. The commutation overlap process caused by the transformer leakage inductance complicates the modeling for LCC. Traditional impedance models are derived in positive sequence and negative sequence frame based on the simplified commutation overlap ...

An Enhanced Strategy to Inhibit Commutation Failure in Line-Commutated Converters

IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, 2020
Failure of the commutation process is a serious malfunction in line-commutated high-voltage direct current (HVdc) converters, which mainly occurs due to inverter ac faults and may lead to outage of the HVdc system. In this paper, an improved strategy is developed that functions based on the SIEMENS HVdc control system under normal conditions and ...

Commutation configurations for the protection of a line commutated converter

PESC '88 Record., 19th Annual IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference, 2003
Methods of protecting a line-commutated converter and load in the event of line-induced converter faults are investigated. The protection philosophy is classified in terms of the DC load type. Protection is found to be comprised of a two-part process, namely, detecting a fault and implementing corrective action during the postfault period.
