On Improving Kernel Estimators Using Line Transect Sampling

Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods, 2005
ABSTRACT We investigate some possibilities for improvements of kernel density estimates using line transect sampling. A bias correction approach is used which produces a new estimator for density of object D. The asymptotic bias of kernel estimator is subtracted from the kernel estimator to form the proposed estimator.

Edge effects in line intersect sampling with segmented transects

Journal of Agricultural, Biological, and Environmental Statistics, 2005
Transects consisting of multiple, connected segments with a prescribed configuration are commonly used in ecological applications of line intersect sampling. The transect configuration has implications for the probability with which population elements are selected and for how the selection probabilities can be modified by the boundary of the tract ...

Confidence Intervals for Densities in Line Transect Sampling

Biometrics, 1990
We consider the problem of estimating the density D of a population of objects or animals with ungrouped data from line transect sampling. We present a method of deriving an approximate confidence interval for D. This confidence interval requires the estimation of a certain standard deviation by the bootstrap method.

Bias correction for histogram estimator using line transect sampling

Environmetrics, 2004
AbstractThis article proposes a simple approach for reducing the bias of the traditional histogram estimator using line transect sampling. The approach uses the bias correction technique, which produces a new estimator for density of objects D. The proposed estimator reduces the bias from O(h2) to O(h3) as h → 0 under the shoulder condition assumption.
