Geometry of Alternating Links

1997
An alternating diagram for a link is, as explained in Chapter 1, one in which the over or under nature of the crossings alternates along every link-component in the diagram; the crossings always go “… over, under, over, under,…” when considered from any starting point. A link is said to be alternating if it possesses such a diagram.

Functional Cross-Linked Hemoglobin Bis-tetramers: Geometry and Cooperativity

Biochemistry, 2008
Hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers have been sought as stable, sterile alternatives to red cells in transfusions. Problems in clinical trials using cross-linked tetramers have led to proposals that larger assemblies of tetramers may alleviate some of the problems.

Conductance and Geometry of Pyridine-Linked Single-Molecule Junctions

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2010
We have measured the conductance and characterized molecule-electrode binding geometries of four pyridine-terminated molecules by elongating and then compressing gold point contacts in a solution of molecules. We have found that all pyridine-terminated molecules exhibit bistable conductance signatures, signifying that the nature of the pyridine-gold ...

Some problematic links between hunting and geometry

Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 1996
AbstractGeary's emphasis on hunting ignores the possible importance of other human activities, such as scavenging and gathering, in the evolution of spatial abilities. In addition, there is little evidence that links spatial abilities and math skills. Furthermore, such links have little practical importance given the small size of most differences and ...

Stable Geometry of a Plane Five-Link Mechanism

Russian Engineering Research, 2018
A five-link mechanism of parallel structure with rotary kinematic pairs is considered. Possible configurations of the mechanism, its working regions, and singular positions are discussed. Possible optimization of its working zone without singular positions of the second kind is analyzed.

Links to Literature: Exploring Real-World Geometry

Teaching Children Mathematics, 2003
Geometry should be a natural and integral part of the mathematics curriculum for elementary students (NCTM 2000). The study of geometry should include a range of activities, from identifying shapes to higher-order processes such as investigating properties of shapes, exploring geometric relationships, and posing and solving geometric problems.

The Geometry of Tracing, a Possible Link Between Geometric Drawing and Euclid’s Geometry?

2023
The reproduction of figures is a common task in elementary school, very present in the curricula and in many textbooks. Under what conditions, especially regarding the use of instruments, does this task allow the conceptualization of geometric objects, in what we call the geometry of tracing?

Possible Link Between Isospace and the Geometry of Space-Time

Physical Review Letters, 1964
A relation between internal degrees of freedom and event space in quantum field theory is suggested. The event space is considered as a Riemann space in accord with general relativity. The dimension, metric, linear connection, and curvature tensor of the internal space are uniquely determined by the Riemann geometry. (L.B.S.)

On the geometry of homotopy invariants of links

Mathematical Proceedings of the Cambridge Philosophical Society, 1992
One of the central problems in higher-dimensional knot theory is the classification of links up to concordance. In 14, Le Dimet constructed a universal model for (disk) link complements, which allowed him to formulate this problem in the framework of surgery theory by applying the Cappell-Shaneson program for studying codimension two embeddings of ...
