Floquet Weyl Phases in a Three Dimensional Network Model

open access: yes, 2016
We study the topological properties of 3D Floquet bandstructures, which are defined using unitary evolution matrices rather than Hamiltonians. Previously, 2D bandstructures of this sort have been shown to exhibit anomalous topological behaviors, such as ...

Investigation of Oxygen‐Free Wetting Behavior of Aluminum on Copper via Molecular Dynamics Simulations and Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The wettability of aluminum droplets (Al) on different copper substrates (Cu), where liquid Al spreads on solid Cu surfaces to form a liquid–solid interface, is studied numerically and experimentally. The experimental and numerical results show good agreement in the fast‐spreading regime.

Horizontal Force Required for Subduction Initiation at Passive Margins With Constraints From Slab Detachment

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2022
Subduction zones are essential drivers of plate tectonics. However, the processes causing subduction zone initiation (SZI), involving the formation of a new plate boundary, and the forces required remain disputed.

Flaw-tolerance in silk fibrils explains strength, extensibility and toughness of spider silk [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Silk is an ancient but remarkably strong, extensible and tough material made from simple protein building blocks. Earlier work has shown that the particular molecular geometry of silk with a composite of semi-amorphous and nanocrystalline beta-sheet ...

Modulating Electrochemical CO2 Reduction Pathways via Interfacial Electric Field

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Engineering interfacial electric fields in Cu/ITO electrodes enables precise control of CO2 reduction pathways. Charge transfer from Cu to ITO generates positively charged Cu species that steer selectivity from ethylene toward methane. This work demonstrates how interfacial electric‐field modulation can direct reaction intermediates and transform ...

Mechanical Properties of a New Type of Link Slab for Simply Supported Steel–Concrete Composite Bridges

open access: yesApplied Sciences
This study investigates the mechanical behavior of a new type of link slab through experimental testing and numerical simulation. A full-scale segmental specimen of an I-shaped steel–concrete composite beam was designed, and a vertical active plus ...

On‐Surface Indigo‐Based Bimolecular Coordination Networks with Programmable Regular or Vitreous Structure

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A previously unreported coordination motif stabilising single Fe atoms by indigo chelation and pyridyl coordination on Au(111) has been revealed. By using planar tritopic pyridyl linkers (TPyB), extended 2D porous networks of indigo3(TPyB)2Fe6 form. These networks can be crystalline or vitreous and offer an environment where individual coordination ...

Finite element simulation of shear stud jointed plain concrete pavement utilizing UHPC link slabs

open access: yesDiscover Civil Engineering
Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) link slab joint was proposed as an alternative to traditional dowelled joints in jointed plain concrete pavements (JPCP) and proved more efficient.

Fluidisation and plastic activity in a model soft-glassy material flowing in micro-channels with rough walls

open access: yes, 2016
By means of mesoscopic numerical simulations of a model soft-glassy material, we investigate the role of boundary roughness on the flow behaviour of the material, probing the bulk/wall and global/local rheologies.
