Cool Kitchen: Processing Starch and Eggshell Powder into Sustainable Coatings for Passive Daytime Cooling

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A food‐grade cooling composite made from starch and recycled eggshell powder offers a scalable, ultra‐low‐cost solution for passive daytime radiative cooling. Easily prepared using basic kitchen tools, this material empowers communities, even in areas with limited infrastructure, to stay cooler during worsening summer heat waves.

Performance assessment of deck link slabs in multi-span bridges: a case study of the Plott Creek Bridge

open access: yesFrontiers in Built Environment
The use of link-slab connections in simply supported multi-span bridge decks is a widely adopted strategy to minimize the number of expansion joints, reducing long-term maintenance issues and improving the roadway surface quality. Current design practice

Links between fluid circulation, temperature, and metamorphism in subducting slabs [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2009
The location and timing of metamorphic reactions in subducting lithosphere are influenced by thermal effects of fluid circulation in the ocean crust aquifer. Fluid circulation in subducting crust extracts heat from the Nankai subduction zone, causing the crust to pass through cooler metamorphic facies than if no fluid circulation occurs.

A Termite‐Inspired Alternative to Cement

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A termite‐inspired composite of clay, cellulose, and lignin forms a dense fibrous network with concrete‐like strength (32 MPa) and superior elasticity, processed at ambient temperature. Abstract Clay combined with organic materials is used by termites as a strong and durable construction material for their mounds with minimal environmental impact. Here,

Late Cretaceous mud volcanism in the southwestern Songliao basin records slab rollback of the subducted paleo-Pacific Plate underneath NE China

open access: yesJournal of Asian Earth Sciences: X, 2020
We present a new seismic reflection dataset and use it to characterize fossil mud volcanoes in the southwestern Songliao graben basin in northeastern China. The results reveal a link between mud volcanism and slab rollback along the eastern Asian margin.

Tuning the Electronic Structure and Spin State of Fe─N─C Catalysts Using an Axial Oxygen Ligand and Fe Clusters for High‐Efficiency Rechargeable Zinc–Air Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A FeN4─O/Clu@NC‐0.1Ac catalyst containing atomically‐dispersed FeN4─O sites (medium‐spin Fe2+) and Fe clusters delivered a half‐wave potential of 0.89 V for ORR and an overpotential of 330 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for OER in 0.1 m KOH. When the catalyst was used in a rechargeable Zn–air battery, a power density of 284.5 mW cm−2 was achieved with excellent ...

A Method for Analyzing Transverse Stress in Link Slabs of Simply Supported Steel–Concrete Composite Bridges

open access: yesBuildings
The cracking of link slabs in jointless bridges presents significant challenges due to the complexity of their stress conditions. This study focused on analyzing the transverse stresses in link slabs of jointless steel–concrete composite bridges ...

Contact Lens with Moiré Patterns for High‐Precision Eye Tracking

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work presents a passive contact lens for high‐precision eye tracking, integrating a microscopic moiré grating label. The parallax‐induced shift of macroscopic moiré patterns enables angle measurement with 0.28° precision using a standard camera under ambient light.
