Pollination requirements of linseed (Linum usitatissimum)

open access: yesThe Journal of Agricultural Science, 1990
SUMMARYThe phenology of anthesis, anther dehiscence, fertilization and petal fall in the linseed cultivar Antares and its response to supplementary pollination when grown in a glasshouse were investigated. Anthesis commenced 15–30 min after the onset of the photophase and was complete within 2 h.

Flax fibre: innovation and change in the early Neolithic: a technological and material perspective [PDF]

open access: yes
Flax (Linum sp.) was one of the first domestic plants in Neolithic Europe, providing a potential cultivable source of fibres for the first farmers. As the plant provides both oil and fibre, it is a matter of enquiry as to whether the plant was first ...

Defensive stratagems of plants, with special reference to allelopathy [PDF]

open access: yes, 1985
The green plant has evolved an array of defences to ameliorate the effects of stresses in its environment. Allelopathy, biochemical interactions between plants, plays a role in plant defence but recent work suggests that some compounds which act as ...

Antioxidant properties of water-soluble gum from flaxseed hulls [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Soluble flaxseed gum (SFG) was extracted from flax (Linum usitatissimum) hulls using hot water, and its functional groups and antioxidant properties were investigated using infrared spectroscopy and different antioxidant assays (2,2-diphenyl-1 ...

Persistent, symptomless, systemic, and seed-borne infection of lettuce by Botrytis cinerea [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Experiments are presented which show that Botrytis cinerea, the cause of gray mould disease, is often present in symptomless lettuce plants as a systemic, endophytic, infection which may arise from seed.

Domestication of Perennial Flax Using an Ideotype Approach for Oilseed, Cut Flower, and Garden Performance

open access: yesAgronomy, 2019
Flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum) has recently grown in popularity as a health food due to its high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Many undomesticated Linum species possess a similar oil profile, in addition to perenniality, and could, therefore, provide ...
