Working 9 to 5: Diurnal Variability in Terrestrial Invertebrate Activity Does Not Compromise Ecosystem Health Assessments in Dry Stream Channels

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, Volume 42, Issue 3, Page 676-688, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Temporary streams are impacted by climate change and other anthropogenic pressures, but fluctuating water levels complicate ecological assessments. Terrestrial invertebrate communities may enable dry‐phase assessments, but their sampling can be resource intensive.

Effects of reindeer grazing and recovery after cessation of grazing on the ground-dwelling spider assemblage in Finnish Lapland [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2019
The effect of reindeer Rangifer tarandus L. grazing on the ground-dwelling spider assemblage in Northern Finland was studied. Changes in species richness, abundance and evenness of spider assemblages were analyzed in relation to changes in vegetation and

Pests for Dinner: Dietary Composition of Insectivorous Bats in a Fragmented Tropical Dry Forest

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 58, Issue 2, March 2026.
Insectivorous bats are key predators of a wide array of arthropods, including species that act as disease vectors and pests, yet such ecological roles remain poorly studied in tropical regions. In this study, we aimed to describe the diet of five insectivorous bat species from the genera Balantiopteryx, Myotis, Mormoops, and Pteronotus inhabiting a ...

Resilience of riparian spiders to floods: evidence from a mesocosm study

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, Volume 19, Issue 2, Page 393-403, March 2026.
Mesocosm experiment to assess the impact of flood duration on flood‐naïve riparian spider communities. In May, spider richness decreased with flood duration, while in June, flood duration increased abundance, richness and promoted wetland specialists. Flood‐naïve riparian spiders unexpectedly appear highly resilient to flooding.

Geographic Variation in the Diet of Red Knot (Calidris canutus) Chicks Reflects Local Prey Communities

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 53, Issue 3, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim To describe and compare the diets of an Arctic‐breeding shorebird, the Red Knot (Calidris canutus), across three geographically distinct breeding sites. We aimed to document the dietary patterns and identify key prey groups that characterise each population's foraging ecology.

A new species of spider (Araneae, Linyphiidae, Islandiana) from a southern Indiana cave

open access: yesSubterranean Biology, 2018
The genus Islandiana (Araneae, Linyphiidae) was erected by Braendegaard in 1932 and is comprised of 14 species, most of which are native to North America. Herein we add a 15th species, Islandiana lewisi sp. n., from southern Indiana, USA.
