Evaluating the sampling effort for the metabarcoding‐based detection of fish environmental DNA in the open ocean

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 3, March 2023., 2023
We evaluated the sampling effort for the metabarcoding‐based detection of fish eDNA in the subtropical and subarctic northwestern Pacific Ocean and Arctic Chukchi Sea. The results suggested that tens of replicates or a substantial filtration volume were required to fully describe the species diversity in the open ocean, and in most cases, the turnover ...

Pathways to polar adaptation in fishes revealed by long‐read sequencing

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 32, Issue 6, Page 1381-1397, March 2023., 2023
Abstract Long‐read sequencing is driving a new reality for genome science in which highly contiguous assemblies can be produced efficiently with modest resources. Genome assemblies from long‐read sequences are particularly exciting for understanding the evolution of complex genomic regions that are often difficult to assemble.

Distinct latitudinal community patterns of Arctic marine vertebrates along the East Greenlandic coast detected by environmental DNA

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 29, Issue 2, Page 316-334, February 2023., 2023
Abstract Aim Greenland is one of the places on Earth where the effects of climate change are most evident. The retreat of sea ice has made East Greenland more accessible for longer periods during the year. East Greenland fjords have been notoriously difficult to study due to their remoteness, dense sea ice conditions and lack of infrastructure.

Evolutionary time and species diversity in aquatic ecosystems worldwide

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 97, Issue 6, Page 2090-2105, December 2022., 2022
ABSTRACT The latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG) is frequently described as the most dramatic biodiversity pattern on Earth, yet ecologists and biogeographers have failed to reach consensus on its primary cause. A key problem in explaining the LDG involves collinearity between multiple factors that are predicted to affect species richness in the same ...

Deciphering Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra L.) and seal (Phoca vitulina L.; Halichoerus grypus F.) diet: Metabarcoding tailored for fresh and saltwater fish species

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 31, Issue 19, Page 5089-5106, October 2022., 2022
Abstract Long‐lived top predators shape biodiversity structure in their ecosystems and predator–prey interactions are critical in decoding how communities function. Studies on the foraging ecology of seals and Eurasian otters in Western Europe are outdated and most studies solely performed traditional hard part analysis.

Diet and trophic structure of fishes in the Barents Sea: between empty and full stomachs - large individual variability follows a common pattern. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Fish Biol
Abstract More than 27,000 stomachs from 70 species of fish were collected from the Barents Sea in 2015. Quantitative stomach content expressed relative to the body weight of the predator fish (g g−1 as %) varied by four to five orders of magnitude for six species with the largest sample size (Atlantic cod Gadus morhua, haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus,

Snailfishes (Pisces: Liparidae) of Australia, including descriptions of thirty new species [PDF]

open access: yesRecords of the Australian Museum, 2001
Examination of all available liparid specimens collected in Australian waters revealed more than 30 new species in three genera: Careproctus Kroyer, Psednos Barnard, and Paraliparis Collett. This is the first published description of liparids from Australia.

Patterns of spatial variability for demersal fish communities on the shelf of the northwestern Bering Sea

open access: yesИзвестия ТИНРО, 2014
Six communities of demersal fishes and cyclostomes are identified on the shelf of the northwestern Bering Sea and their structure is described on the data of complex bottom trawl surveys conducted in 2004 and 2005.

Three new snailfishes (Scorpaeniformes: Liparidae) from bathyal depths of the Arctic

open access: yesProceedings of the Zoological Institute RAS, 2010
Three new species of snailfishes caught in the Norwegian Sea south-west of Bear Island at a depth 1470 to 1695 m, are described. Careproctus moskalevi sp. nov. and Careproctus latiosus sp. nov. are most similar to C. micropus (Gunther, 1887) from the depths of Faroe Channel; they are included in subgenus Careproctula Andriashev 2003.
