This is a basic overview of liposuction. Liposuction is the removal of fat using cannulas (tubes) inserted through tiny incisions into the adipose tissue. When done correctly, nice results can be safely achieved with a very easy procedure.

Liposuction is the most common cosmetic surgical procedure worldwide. It provides effective contouring of the torso, extremities, and submental areas in properly selected patients. Tumescent liposuction, a local anesthesia technique, and superwet liposuction, a systemic anesthesia technique, are the most common methods.

Over a period of 12 years, the authors have seen that skin retracts after the judicious treatment of deep and superficial layers of fat tissue, laying to rest what has been one of the biggest fears of this treatment of lipoaspiration, namely cutaneous flaccidity. The adequate and judicious approach to these two layers, along with the increasing use and

The evolution of liposuction has been multidisciplinary. The tumescent variant was developed using dilute local lidocaine and epinephrine and was meant to specifically exclude additional intravenous sedation, regional or general anesthesia, and intravenous fluids.

Liposuction is a widely used technique today and indications are that it is becoming even more popular due to new technical refinements. The use of cannulae with a smaller diameter allows suction of the fat immediately under the dermis. The cannula we use to perform this new kind of fat suction is straight and has an external diameter of less than 2 mm.

Power liposuction seems to be a significant advance in the evolution of the liposuction procedure. It allows for a faster, less painful recovery for the patient and is less of a strain on the surgeon, increasing the precision of the procedure. Complications are less than those seen with traditional liposuction performed under local tumescent anesthesia.
