Experimental and theoretical investigations into the switching of liquid crystal devices

open access: yes, 2007
This work addresses the dynamic switching of liquid crystal cells. While static measurements of the permittivity liquid crystal cells are well established, here a novel transient permittivity technique is developed and applied to several liquid ...

Transfer Printing and Reconfiguration of Soft Electronics Using Digital Microfluidics and Laser Machining

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This paper presents a digital microfluidics‐based technique for transferring and reconfiguring soft nanomembranes. Laser‐machined nanothin membranes are picked up, transported, and aligned via tailored surface tension and the actuation of water droplets, enabling the development of flexible electronics, the integration of functional materials on 3D ...

Gas-Liquid Two-Phase Flow in Up and Down Vertical Pipes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Multiphase flows occurring in pipelines with a serpentine configuration is an important phenomenon, which can be encountered in heat exchangers used in a variety of industrial processes.

Electrode and Microstructure Dependence of Oxygen Diffusion in Ferroelectric Hafnium Zirconium Oxide Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Significant nanoscale oxygen diffusion coefficient variations are measured in ferroelectric hafnium zirconium oxide films with grain boundaries and electrode interfaces exhibiting values 104 times larger than the grain cores. Overall coefficients are 10X larger for films prepared with metal nitride electrodes compared to refractory metals. New insights

Investigation of flexoelectricity and ionic contamination in nematic liquid crystals

open access: yes, 2009
The work presented is a study of nematic liquid crystal physical properties. One of the phenomenon investigated is the bistability or in other words, the ability of the director of the material to rest in different orientations as function of the ...

Resolving the Cu(bdc) Conundrum: Identifying Non‐Porous Packing of Prototypical Coordination‐Network Thin Films Combining Advanced Diffraction Techniques and Computational Modelling

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Solution‐processed Cu(bdc) forms prototypical MOF thin films for which a multitude of not fully satisfactory structural models have been suggested. Combining rotating grazing‐incidence diffraction and X‐ray reflectivity on two complementary samples with density‐functional theory, we first discard the previously suggested models and then identify a non ...

PHYSICAL AND MATHEMATICAL MODEL OF LIQUID AND GAS PHASES EQUILIBRIUM AT CONSTANT PRESSURE

open access: yesВестник Кемеровского государственного университета, 2013
PCEAS is a forecasting molecular thermodynamic model based on the experimental data about pure components pa rameters. It can feature phase equilibrium of mixtures of different materials (liquid solvents; solid salts and polymers); and also allows to ...

Nanoengineered Binetworks in Multifunctional Anionic Block Polymer Mesoblends for Improved Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Mesoblends consist of a nanostructured polymer into which a second polymer is imbibed with a selective solvent. In this work, a solvent‐templatable pentablock terpolymer possessing a sulfonated midblock is modified with a hydrophilic polymer that is photocrosslinked in situ, yielding a hierarchical binetwork.

Local stability and a renormalized Newton Method for equilibrium liquid crystal director modeling

open access: yes, 2012
We consider the nonlinear systems of equations that result from discretizations of a prototype variational model for the equilibrium director field characterizing the orientational properties of a liquid crystal material.

Liquid-liquid Extraction of Copper(II), Cadmium(II), Lead(II) and Zinc(II) from Perchlorate and Tartrate Media by Di-2-methylnonylphosphoric Acid into Heptane [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The liquid-liquid extraction equilibrium of Cu(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) from 0.10 M perchlorate medium by di-2-methylnonylphosphoric acid (DMNPA) as an extractant dissolved in heptane has been investigated.
