Colloids are abundant in nature, science, and technology, with examples ranging from milk to quantum dots and the colloidal atom paradigm. Similarly, liquid crystal ordering is important in contexts ranging from biological membranes to laboratory models of cosmic strings and liquid crystal displays in consumer devices.

The tricritical and the re-entrant nematic behaviour are two of the most relevant features of the Smectic A (SmA)-to-Nematic (N) phase transition in binary mixtures of liquid crystals. Both of these concepts are studied from a theoretical and an experimental point of view for some two-component systems whose members are calamitic liquid crystals ...

Soliton walls paired by polar surface interactions in a ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal
Surface interactions are usually polar along the normal to the interface and apolar within the interface. Here, the authors find that polar in-plane surface interactions produce domain structures in the bulk of a ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal.

Azimuthal Anchoring Strength in Photopatterned Alignment of a Nematic
Spatially-varying director fields have become an important part of research and development in liquid crystals. Characterization of the anchoring strength associated with a spatially-varying director is difficult, since the methods developed for a ...

Ferroelectric nematic liquids with conics
Defect lines shaped as conic sections are common in smectic liquid crystals, where they manifest equidistance of molecular layers curled in space. Here authors present hyperbolas and parabolas as domain walls in ferroelectric nematics, which are shaped ...

SignificanceWe propose a class of active matter, the living liquid crystal (LLC), representing motile rod-shaped bacteria placed in water-based nontoxic liquid crystal. Long-range orientational order of the liquid crystal and the swimming activity of bacteria demonstrate a strong coupling that dramatically alters individual and collective bacterial ...

Monolithic shape-programmable dielectric liquid crystal elastomer actuators [PDF]
Maxwell stress–activated shape-morphing liquid crystal elastomer actuators are efficient, fast, and forceful. Soft robotics may enable many new technologies in which humans and robots physically interact, yet the necessary high-performance soft actuators

Cholesteric liquid crystals are frequently produced by the addition of chiral dopants to achiral nematic hosts. We report here the synthesis and performance of chiral dopants obtained from bio-betulin produced by a fermentation process.
