Stiffening Liquid Crystal Elastomers with Liquid Crystal Inclusions. [PDF]
Abstract Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are promising building blocks for soft robots, given their large, programmable, reversible, and stimuli‐responsive shape change. Enhancing LCEs’ stiffness and toughness has been a longstanding desire previously explored by reinforcing them with fillers, crystalline microdomains, and ...

Soliton walls paired by polar surface interactions in a ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal
Surface interactions are usually polar along the normal to the interface and apolar within the interface. Here, the authors find that polar in-plane surface interactions produce domain structures in the bulk of a ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal.

SignificanceWe propose a class of active matter, the living liquid crystal (LLC), representing motile rod-shaped bacteria placed in water-based nontoxic liquid crystal. Long-range orientational order of the liquid crystal and the swimming activity of bacteria demonstrate a strong coupling that dramatically alters individual and collective bacterial ...

Azimuthal Anchoring Strength in Photopatterned Alignment of a Nematic
Spatially-varying director fields have become an important part of research and development in liquid crystals. Characterization of the anchoring strength associated with a spatially-varying director is difficult, since the methods developed for a ...

Ferroelectric nematic liquids with conics
Defect lines shaped as conic sections are common in smectic liquid crystals, where they manifest equidistance of molecular layers curled in space. Here authors present hyperbolas and parabolas as domain walls in ferroelectric nematics, which are shaped ...

Ferroelectric liquid crystals [PDF]
A general symmetry argument is presented, and experiments on newly synthesized p-decyloxybenzylidene p'-amino 2-methyl butyl cinnamate are described, demonstrating that chiral smectic C and H liquid crystals are ferroelectric. Some of the properties of this new class of ferro-electrics are discussed.

Cholesteric liquid crystals are frequently produced by the addition of chiral dopants to achiral nematic hosts. We report here the synthesis and performance of chiral dopants obtained from bio-betulin produced by a fermentation process.

Self-Localized Liquid Crystal Micro-Droplet Arrays on Chemically Patterned Surfaces
Liquid crystal (LC) micro-droplet arrays are elegant systems that have a range of applications, such as chemical and biological sensing, due to a sensitivity to changes in surface properties and strong optical activity.

The design and investigation of nanocomposites containing dimeric nematogens and liquid crystal gold nanoparticles with plasmonic properties showing a nematic-nematic phase transition (Nᵤ-Nₓ/Ntb) [PDF]
The construction of liquid crystal compositions consisting of the dimeric liquid crystal, CB_C9_CB (cyanobiphenyl dimer = 1",9"-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yl)nonane), and the range of nematic systems is explored.
