Chromatic dispersion of liquid crystal infiltrated capillary tubes and photonic crystal fibers

open access: yes, 2006
We consider chromatic dispersion of capillary tubes and photonic crystal fibers infiltrated with liquid crystals. A perturbative scheme for inclusion of material dispersion of both liquid crystal and the surrounding waveguide material is derived.

Liquid Crystals Templating [PDF]

open access: yesCrystals, 2020
Liquid crystal templating is a versatile technique to create novel organic and inorganic materials with nanoscale features. It exploits the self-assembled architectures of liquid crystal phases as scaffolds. This article focuses on some of the key developments in lyotropic and thermotropic liquid crystals templating.

Mechanochemical Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructured ErB4 and NdB4 Rare‐Earth Tetraborides

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
ErB4 and NdB4 nanostructured powders are produced by mechanochemical synthesis. 5 h mechanical alloying and 4 M HCl acid leaching are used in the production. ErB4 and NdB4 powders exhibit maximum magnetization of 0.4726 emu g−1 accompanied with an antiferromagnetic‐to‐paramagnetic phase transition at about TN = 18 K and 0.132 emu g−1 with a maximum at ...

Total immersion crystal growth [PDF]

open access: yes, 1987
Crystals of wide band gap materials are produced by positioning a holder receiving a seed crystal at the interface between a body of molten wide band gap material and an overlying layer of temperature-controlled, encapsulating liquid.

Liquid Crystals

open access: yes
Liquid crystals are an intermediate state (3-1) (Mesophase) described as a fourth state of matter. It was first called “flowing crystals” and “fluid crystals.” It appears between the solid phase, in which the movement of molecules is restricted in the triangular lattice. Dimensions and have an integrated molecular organization in location and direction,

A Different Perspective on the Solid Lubrication Performance of Black Phosphorous: Friend or Foe?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Researchers investigate black phosphorous (BP) as a standalone solid lubricant coating through ball‐on‐disc linear‐reciprocating sliding experiments in dry conditions. Testing on different metals shows BP doesn't universally reduce friction and wear. However, it achieves 33% friction reduction on rougher iron surfaces and 23% wear reduction on aluminum.

Crystal design using multipolar electrostatic interactions: A concept study for organic electronics

open access: yesBeilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry, 2013
Using a simple synthetic protocol, heterohexacene analogues with a quadrupolar distribution of partial charges are readily available. In contrast to most other acenes, these compounds crystallize with a slipped-stack, brickwork-like packing which is ...

Consolidate Overview of Ribonucleic Acid Molecular Dynamics: From Molecular Movements to Material Innovations

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Molecular dynamics simulations are advancing the study of ribonucleic acid (RNA) and RNA‐conjugated molecules. These developments include improvements in force fields, long‐timescale dynamics, and coarse‐grained models, addressing limitations and refining methods.

Nonlinear Elasticity, Fluctuations and Heterogeneity of Nematic Elastomers

open access: yes, 2007
Liquid crystal elastomers realize a fascinating new form of soft matter that is a composite of a conventional crosslinked polymer gel (rubber) and a liquid crystal. These {\em solid} liquid crystal amalgams, quite similarly to their (conventional, fluid)

First‐Principles Modeling of Solid Solution Softening and Hardening Effects in Al–Mg–Zr–Si Aluminum Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The role of various alloying elements in face‐centered cubic aluminum on the barrier of a Shockley partial dislocation during its motion is presented. The study aims to understand how alloying atoms such as Mg, Si, and Zr affect the energy landscape for dislocation motion, thus influencing the solid solution hardening and softening in aluminum, which ...
