Electro-optical Simulation of a-Si Thin-Film-Transistor Liquid Crystal Display Pixels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
An analysis of an amorphous silicon (a-Si) thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal display (TFT-LCD) pixel is presented. The electro-optical model combines the electrical properties of the switching element and the optical performance of a twisted nematic ...

The Freedericksz Transition in a Spatially Varying Magnetic Field

open access: yesCrystals, 2021
Much is known about the Freedericksz transition induced by uniform electric and magnetic fields in nematic liquid crystals. In this work, we are interested in the effects of a spatially varying field on the transition. Specifically, we study the director

Smart Thermally Switchable Liquid Crystal Window

open access: yesAdvanced Photonics Research, 2021
Global warming, due to the consumption of fossil energy, is one of the biggest challenges in recent days. Air conditioning (cooling and heating) of office and residential buildings is one of the largest energy consumptions.

Fine structure of the topological defect cores studied for disclinations in lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
Topological defects play important roles in determining material properties, whilst their core regions remain unexplored due to strongly distorted structures. Zhouet al.

Nanocomposites and methods for synthesis and use thereof [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Nanocomposite compositions and methods of synthesis of the compositions are described. In particular, liquid crystal-functionalized nanoparticles, liquid crystal-templated nanoparticles, nanocomposite compositions including the nanoparticles, and ...

Biological liquid crystal elastomers [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Series B: Biological Sciences, 2002
Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) have recently been described as a new class of matter. Here we review the evidence for the novel conclusion that the fibrillar collagens and the dragline silks of orb web spiders belong to this remarkable class of materials. Unlike conventional rubbers, LCEs are ordered, rather than disordered, at rest.

Designs of Plasmonic Metamasks for Photopatterning Molecular Orientations in Liquid Crystals

open access: yesCrystals, 2016
Aligning liquid crystal (LC) molecules into spatially non-uniform orientation patterns is central to the functionalities of many emerging LC devices. Recently, we developed a new projection photopatterning technique by using plasmonic metamasks (PMMs ...

Liquid crystal elastomer coatings with programmed response of surface profile

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
Liquid crystal elastomers are anisotropic rubbers which can be actuated by an external trigger. Here the authors develop elastomer coatings with pre-patterned molecular orientation that induces deterministic topography changes in response to changes in ...

Author Correction: Liquid crystal elastomer coatings with programmed response of surface profile

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
The original version of this Article contained errors in Figs. 1a, 2a, 3a, and 4b, in which the units on the scale bars incorrectly read ‘µm’ rather than the correct ‘nm.’ This has been corrected in both the PDF and HTML versions of the Article.
