Constitutive Modeling of Patterned Liquid Crystal Elastomer for Active Flow Control [PDF]
Patterned liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) has been shown to have significant promise in surface topography control. Large and diverse shapes and surface adaptive responses have been shown using LCE materials with patterned director profiles. Using various

Numerical Modeling of Photothermal Self‐Excited Composite Oscillators
We present a numerical framework for simulating photothermal self‐excited oscillations. The driving mechanism is elucidated by highlighting the roles of inertia and overshoot, as well as the phase lag between the thermal moment and the oscillation angle, which together construct the feedback loop between the system state and the environmental stimulus.

Memory effects in liquid crystal elastomers [PDF]
Free-standing monodomain liquid crystal elastomer samples are shown to have a complete memory of the orientational configuration at the time of cross-linking. This memory is demonstrated through samples in which the parent polymer system is first aligned

Continuum mechanics of line defects in liquid crystals and liquid crystal elastomers
This paper generalizes the Ericksen-Leslie continuum model of liquid crystals to allow for dynamically evolving line defect distributions. In analogy with recent mesoscale models of dislocations, we introduce fields that represent defects in orientational and positional order through the incompatibility of the director and deformation ‘gradient’ fields.

Light-fueled self-rotation of a liquid crystal elastomer rod enabled by lateral constraint
Recent experiments have found that a liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) rod supported in the middle can rotate continuously under horizontal illumination due to the combined impacts of gravity and light-fueled lateral bending deformation.
