Biological liquid crystal elastomers [PDF]
Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) have recently been described as a new class of matter. Here we review the evidence for the novel conclusion that the fibrillar collagens and the dragline silks of orb web spiders belong to this remarkable class of materials. Unlike conventional rubbers, LCEs are ordered, rather than disordered, at rest.

Synthesis and characterization of cholesteric liquid crystal elastomer films [PDF]
A series of liquid crystal elastomer films (the PBC series) have been synthesized by grafting liquid crystal (LC) monomer 4-allyloxybenzoic acid cholesteryl ester (MB) and crosslinking agent [1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diyl bis(undec-10-enoate) (MC) onto ...

Preparation of Monodomain Liquid Crystal Elastomers and Liquid Crystal Elastomer Nanocomposites [PDF]
LCEs are shape-responsive materials with fully reversible shape change and potential applications in medicine, tissue engineering, artificial muscles, and as soft robots. Here, we demonstrate the preparation of shape-responsive liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) and LCE nanocomposites along with characterization of their shape-responsiveness, mechanical ...

Liquid crystal elastomer composites for soft actuators
Liquid crystal elastomers are active materials that combine the anisotropic properties of liquid crystals with the elasticity of polymer networks. The LCEs exhibit remarkable reversible contraction and elongation capabilities in response to external ...

Light-driven peristaltic pumping by an actuating splay-bend strip
Small-scale manipulation of liquids is being controlled with bulky pumps or power sources. Dradrach et al. show a light-driven pumping of micro-liter liquid using a centimeter-long liquid crystal elastomer strip.

Stabilized director buckling patterns in nematic elastomers and their dynamic optical effects
Light diffusion effects in liquid crystals are important for security and lighting devices. Here, viewing angle dependent pearlescence and iridescence are reported in a nematic liquid crystal elastomer with a stabilized director buckling pattern, which ...

Interpenetrating Liquid-Crystal Polyurethane/Polyacrylate Elastomer with Ultrastrong Mechanical Property [PDF]
Liquid-crystal elastomer (LCE) materials, which have been developed and investigated for 4 decades, still lack real industrial applications. The fundamental obstacle is the modest force of LCEs generated in the LC-to-isotropic phase transition process ...
