Liquid Crystal Elastomer Electric Locomotives

ACS Macro Letters, 2020
In this letter, we present an electro-driven cylindrical actuator system composed of a bilayered liquid crystal elastomer/carbon black (LCE/CB) electro-driven soft actuator and a conductive track. The bilayered LCE/CB electro-driven actuator consists of an inner LCE circular band and several U-shaped CB conductive regions stuck on the outer surface of ...

Voxelated liquid crystal elastomers

Science, 2015
Making small actuators more effective Liquid-crystal molecules orient locally in response to external fields. When long-chain liquid-crystalline molecules are crosslinked together, changes in local orientation can lead to significant volume changes. Ware et al. made efficient microactuators that can change

Liquid Crystal Elastomer Balloons

Macromolecules, 2001
We describe a setup for mechanical measurements of smectic liquid crystal elastomers and study two materials with different network topologies. The elastic response of macroscopically oriented smectic elastomers to a two-dimensionally isotropic stress in the film plane is measured.

4D-Printable Liquid Metal–Liquid Crystal Elastomer Composites

ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 2020
Soft actuators that undergo programmable shape change in response to a stimulus are enabling components of future soft robots and other soft machines. Strategies to power these actuators often require the incorporation of rigid, electrically conductive materials into the soft actuator, thus limiting the compliance and shape change of the material.

Liquid Crystal Elastomers

2003
Abstract Liquid crystals are fluids with a directionality defined. Polymers are long molecules with a shape that can be changed. As a network, polymers form rubber - a soft solid that is locally liquid-like and capable of huge extension.

Shape-responsive liquid crystal elastomer bilayers

Soft Matter, 2014
Monodomain liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are shape-responsive materials, but shape changes are typically limited to simple uniaxial extensions or contractions. Here, we demonstrate that complex surface patterns and shape changes, including patterned wrinkles, helical twisting, and reversible folding, can be achieved in LCE-polystyrene (PS) bilayers.
