Smart lens: tunable liquid lens for laser tracking
SPIE Proceedings, 2007A tracking system utilizing tunable liquid lens is proposed and demonstrated. Adapting the concept of EWOD (electrowetting-on-dielectric), the curvature of a droplet on a dielectric film can be controlled by varying the applied voltage. When utilizing the droplet as an optical lens, the focal length of this adaptive liquid lens can be adjusted as ...

Trifocal lens system with liquid crystal Fresnel lens
Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, 2018In this paper, we present the construction of a trifocal lens system by combining a liquid-crystal (LC) lens and an ordinary lens. The focusing properties of the proposed system can be controlled by changing the polarization state of the incident light wave.

The thermodynamics of a liquid lens
Journal of the Chemical Society, Faraday Transactions 2, 1983The conditions of equilibrium of a small lens of one liquid at the surface of another are obtained in terms of the surface and line tensions. Gravity is neglected. The intersection of the three surfaces of tension, which is also the line of tension, is separated from the surfaces and lines on which surface and linear adsorptions vanish by distances of ...

Liquid Pressure Varifocus Lens
Optical Review, 2005A liquid pressure varifocus lens that consists of a thin polymer film and liquid is described. The lens can be continuously changed from a concave to a convex shape by driving the liquid pressure in the lens. The dynamic range of the focal length of the convex lens is from 50 to 250 mm. A beam spot verifies the variable focal function on a photographic

A liquid crystal (LC) negative lens is realized using a two-voltage-driving system. The focal length of the lens is tuned electrically. The properties of the lens are calculated and measured. The LC lens has a very wide focus range, and it preserves its optical quality over the entire range.

Liquid Crystal Anamorphic Lens
Japanese Journal of Applied Physics, 2005A liquid crystal (LC) anamorphic lens is realized using an LC cell with a transparent electrode and a divided electrode with a hole in the center. By applying appropriate potentials on the divided electrode, the LC cell behaves like an optical lens with astigmatic properties.

Ultrasound liquid crystal lens
Applied Physics Letters, 2018A variable-focus lens using a combination of liquid crystals and ultrasound is discussed. The lens uses a technique based on ultrasound vibration to control the molecular orientation of the liquid crystal. The lens structure is simple, with no mechanical moving parts and no transparent electrodes, which is helpful for device downsizing; the structure ...

The study of inhomogeneous surfaces for liquid crystal alignment has witnessed a rapid growth in recent years. Such alignment is capable of generating high pretilt angles for liquid crystal. Several experiments showed that high pretilt angles could be applied to different applications such as multi-stable displays and No Bias Bend fast response time ...

A New Lens for RNA Localization: Liquid-Liquid Phase Separation
Annual Review of Microbiology, 2018RNA localization mechanisms have been intensively studied and include localized protection of mRNA from degradation, diffusion-coupled local entrapment of mRNA, and directed transport of mRNAs along the cytoskeleton. While it is well understood how cells utilize these three mechanisms to organize mRNAs within the cytoplasm, a newly appreciated ...

Liquid bridge as a tunable-focus cylindrical liquid lens
Applied Physics Letters, 2017We proposed a method to create a tunable-focus cylindrical liquid lens using a liquid bridge between two narrow surfaces. Due to the surface edge effect, the interface of the liquid bridge (on the long side) was shown to be able to serve as a tunable-focus cylindrical liquid lens.
