Three-phase electrowetting liquid lens with deformable liquid iris

open access: yesOptics Express, 2023
Inspired by the arrangement of iris and crystalline lens in human eyes, we propose a three-phase electrowetting liquid lens with a deformable liquid iris (TELL-DLI). The proposed electrowetting liquid lens has three-phase fluid: air, conductive liquid, and dyed insulating liquid.

Hyperactive ice‐binding proteins stabilize cell membranes and improve resistance to dehydration stress in Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
TisIBP8, a fungal‐derived hyperactive ice‐binding protein, helps Caenorhabditis elegans survive dehydration. It localizes near cell membranes, reduces cell damage, and helps maintain membrane structure during drying. These results suggest that ice‐binding proteins can protect cells from dehydration stress as well as freezing stress.

Adaptive Liquid Lens Actuated by Droplet Movement

open access: yesMicromachines, 2014
In this paper we report an adaptive liquid lens actuated by droplet movement. Four rectangular PMMA (Polymethyl Methacrylate) substrates are stacked to form the device structure. Two ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) sheets stick on the bottom substrate.

Evaluating the involvement of autolysosomes in the nuclear translocation of fluorescent proteins

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Endogenously expressed fluorescent proteins can be degraded by autophagy and transported to cell nuclei via the nuclear pore complex. But in some cell lines, for example, HeLa cells which are positive for immunoreactivity of a receptor ligand, such as UCN I, in cell nuclei, fusion of autolysosome with the nuclear envelope is involved in the nuclear ...

Tilted LCD Pixel With Liquid Crystal GRIN Lens for Two-Dimensional/Three-Dimensional Switchable Display

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2019
In this paper, high images quality switchable two-dimensional (2-D)/3-D display is achieved by carefully matching the high-resolution liquid crystal display (LCD) pixel structure and liquid crystal graded index (GRIN) lens.

Near‐Field Electrospinning Micro‐Printhead Achieves Precise Control of Nanofiber Deposition

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A micro‐printhead for near‐field electrospinning enables reproducible deposition of polymer nanofibers with diameters below 50 nm. Systematic parameter studies uncover the mechanisms linking operating conditions to fiber morphology, paving the way for precise and low‐cost nanoscale 3D manufacturing. As a high‐resolution, cost‐effective, and rapid ...

A New Dual-Frequency Liquid Crystal Lens with Ring-and-Pie Electrodes and a Driving Scheme to Prevent Disclination Lines and Improve Recovery Time

open access: yesSensors, 2011
A new liquid crystal lens design is proposed to improve the recovery time with a ring-and-pie electrode pattern through a suitable driving scheme and using dual-frequency liquid crystals (DFLC) MLC-2048.

The use of liquid crystal adaptive optics devices in astronomy [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
Images obtained from large astronomical telescopes are distorted and blurred by the effects of the atmosphere. In order to compensate for this, an adaptive optics system can be incorporated downstream from the telescope focus.

Creating Ti–Fe α/β Alloys by Diffusion‐Driven Solid‐State Processing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study proposes making alloys containing fast diffusing elements that are difficult to produce by ingot metallurgy, by diffusion‐driven solid‐state HIP processing of elemental powders and low‐temperature homogenisation. Here, novel Fe‐Ti α–β alloys are formed having fine α–β lamellae, a small β prior grain size without significant intermetallics ...
