Emergence of Liquid Metals in Nanotechnology

open access: yesACS Nano, 2019
Bulk liquid metals have prospective applications as soft and fluid electrical and thermal conductors in electronic and optical devices, composites, microfluidics, robotics, and metallurgy with unique opportunities for processing, chemistry, and function. Yet liquid metals' great potential in nanotechnology remains in its infancy.

From liquid metal dealloying to liquid metal expulsion

Journal of Materials Science, 2020
In liquid metal dealloying, it is assumed that the corrosion product (dealloyed porous solids) is wetted by the liquid metal; otherwise, the dealloying may be halted due to liquid metal expulsion. Here, we report the first observation of liquid metal expulsion in liquid metal dealloying—liquid Ga rushes out of porous C when the dealloying of Mn–C alloy

Penetration of liquid metals into solid metals and liquid metal embrittlement

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2004
Abstract For some solid metal–liquid metal couples that exhibit liquid metal embrittlement, penetration of the embrittling liquid metal along grain boundaries of the solid metal is observed. Penetration speed of liquid gallium into aluminum and that of mercury into silver and copper were measured by using thin evaporated films.

Liquid–Liquid Phase Transition in Metallic Droplets

The Journal of Physical Chemistry A, 2022
We report theoretical evidence of the substrate-induced liquid-liquid phase transition (LLPT) behaviors in a single Al droplet and Ti-Al droplets. The Al droplet can produce an LLPT induced by substrates in part, forming a special three-layer structure. However, the introduction of a Ti droplet can promote the LLPT in an Al droplet.
